They were probably more perfectionist in the late 80s, 90s which is what made the JT and AB what they are - well at least for Bono anyway, his songwriting has definitely gotten lazier over time - his lyrics are much cheesier now or just plain silly now - it started around the ATYCLB era which gave us poetic gems like Elevation. I blame it on the 'back to basics' push, which they basically resulted in them as being musically lazy and not trying to push new ground anymore (the massive success this has had for them hasn't helped either).
While NLOTH was better, it's hard to completely break free from the last decade or so of bad habits which is why we have cringeworthy lyrics in songs like GOYB, SUC, MOS, UC etc.
Zooropa II is definately whats needed, Zooropa struck the balance of fine songwriting with daring production perfectly, the ideal compliment to Achtung. I really hope they do not dissapoint.......
