1. 1:0 for you.

Listened to the live version again. Musically I like it much better than the old studio version. Especially the new chorus. Still not a great song but not as pointless as it was before. Lyrics are another story.
  2. I keep trying to download the show but it wont let me on torrents... I have heard it twice on youtube though..
  3. I agree that musically the arrangement is in some ways superior to the studio version, but the "because because" and the "You’re gonna kill me and I wanna die" is HORRIBLE. I know how people have different musical tastes, with some of U2's work, but honestly I fail to understand why anybody would say some of those new lyrics are better. Sure Mercy originally had some very cheesy lyrics, but this a whole new level of cheese and not for the better.

    +1

I liked the new solo, but if this new Mercy appears on Songs Of Ascent, I'll keep listening to the old one...
  5. I think i'm in the minority who likes this new version better. The old one was too long an unfinished for my taste. Not that this sounds finished either but it's a step in the right direction. Solo is also a marked improvement as everyone seems to agree on.
  6. I have been listening to both for the last few days, like both the Old and New versions. What I like about the new version is the faster tempo and the new chorus, including the Wizard of Oz "because, because, because." But they could have kept many of the lyrics in the later stanzas from the older version. I hope they did not cut them just to make the song shorter.

Hey, Bono! Keep in the lines about love, justice, charity, the end of history and the enemy of misery!
  7. I've been away for 3 days and wow what a suprise was this ?!

Great they played it, as i REALLY like the leaked version, but i feel it's now a bit like Boots... => Great when it begins, but the chorus screws it all...

  8. Yea, you're not exactly hard to please are you - I agree that Mercy is definitely up there with the poetic brilliance seen on albums like Flamingo and songs by Taylor Swift.

For everyone else - I really don't know what is wrong with Bono - do you think he writes such hammy stuff on purpose, perhaps he think it'll connect better with low brow, mainstream audiences who like listening to the tripe on radio these days.

Because songs like Unknown Caller, MoS, Being Born, White as Snow etc clearly show that he's capable of decent writing these days (just look at Disappearing Act, the second verse is as good as anything he's ever written) so maybe he just gets lazy occassionally and doesn't try too hard on certain songs thinking it'll be good enough? Which it is compared to where music is today.
  9. You think Unknown Caller has good lyrics? Yikes. You wanna talk about hammy cheese, that song is a veritable ham and cheese sandwich.

The verses do, not the choruses. Though I think the choruses work ok (unlike say GOYB) as they're in keeping with the theme of the song.

The problem with his writing these days is songs often have both great and terrible lyrics side by side, see UC, MoS etc.

  12. They do?

I disagree, but to each their own. Unknown Caller is the only track on NLOTH that I lunge for the Skip button for.
