Well, most of us heard 30 seconds of each song on NLOTH over two months before it was released, and no one complained ... But I get what you say, and I more or less agree. They have played that songs in front of over 500.000 people, and they know that thousands more have listened/watched them thru the itnernet. The most logical thing would be releasing an EP containing studio versions of the songs, and not including them on the upcoming album. But there's always the lazyness...........

I wouldn't be as bothered by them releasing the new songs they played on an album as it seems alot of you guys would. While they did play them live I still don't feel like we've really heard them yet. Especially every breaking wave and north star. What we would get from a studio version might be very different from what they were experimenting with this summer.

    Just a thought...
  2. Why not release an EP or iTunes release of bonus tracks or even a real concert DVD alongside it showing the new songs being played e.g. Mercy, Spiderman, Glastonbury etc and some backstage footage? Even a documentary showing the process of recording in-studio.

Alice Cooper - Along Came A Spider (3 bonus tracks and music video)
Aerosmith - Just Push Play (3 - 4 bonus tracks)
AC/DC - Iron Man 2 (movie soundtrack + live DVD)
Coldplay - X&Y (6 bonus tracks + DVD with music videos)
Jimi Hendrix - Valleys Of Neptune (4 bonus tracks + 2 videos + free online content)
Meat Loaf - Hang Cool Teddy Bear (two bonus tracks + live album + ongoing B-side releases)
Orianthi - Believe (7 bonus tracks and videos)
Slash - Slash (at least another 15-20 tracks + DVD + live album)
The Rolling Stones (original Exile album + 10 tracks)
U2 - No Line On The Horizon (1 alternate track + arthouse movie) (!!!)

I'm sure you can see what I'm getting at there.

Why U2 can't include even a few 'real outtakes' as a second rarities album or EP I dunno, not polished, not doctored - as is. A live EP just doesn't sound that interesting or appealing to many. More people would possibly be willing to pay the $10 or whatever it is, if the band bothers to include something remotely interesting. A poster, book, arthouse film and not much else doesn't do it for most people - including myself.

Yes, but they would be the same songs after all. Even with different lyrics and/or tempos and/or chord structure, the fact is that we would already know them! And not only us, hardcore fans etc. : thousands of casual fans have listened to them already!!

Don't get me wrong: I would love them releasing North Star and EBW and Glastonbury... I just dont want that already known (in a way) songs to get the spot of 3 or 4 other completely unknown tunes in the new album

I think it's a great marketing idea. This way when you buy the album you aren't just buying it because of the band or the single. You know 3 or 4 songs off it.

That's the reason why the singles were invented Although I like the way you explained it, it actually makes sense!

  6. ah yes, proper singles, I remember when that was a popular thing to do.... a long, long time ago....

BTW, thanks for your posts, finaly some good discussion again on this topic
I'm still hoping for a proper Xmas release this year... It can't be right that there is only a limited vinyl ep with just 3 songs on it, can it?

I like the way you're thinking Drew!
  8. I really excited about the next new album. Not the ep, I think it's nice, but the full album of new songs. I think with them performing new material live, their really trying to work the songs out to sound great, in a live setting. I think they are gonna have great results. GUYS don't take as long on this one, it will be great!

-Yeah, that would be really cool. I watched the making of NLOTH several times and found it very interesting. I agree.

It's really a cool thing to include. Several albums I've picked up in the last year - Aerosmith, Meat Loaf, Joe Perry, Slash, Jimi Hendrix have all had that.

Totally agree with your thoughts Drew.

It's better than a cd with a lot of formats and variants, but all with basically the same thing.
  11. And going by the relative failure of the singles doing well - although maybe the contents were to blame - that could be avoided by putting a few b-sides and if they have to, some remixes too on a seperate disc or vinyl.

    True!

A good example would have been HTDAAB...They put 11 (or 12) songs in the cd, but they got 20 or more songs from that sessions...Why not realease some of then as b-sides or in a vynyl? It would be awesome in my opinion.
