    What does "mold" mean?

Working on your alibi reminds me inevitaly to Mr. Brightside

Thanks! "Mold" in this sense would be something already formed for you to conform to. Like...plastic toys are made from molds- they pour the plastic into a mold and it forms. Or, you could say, "break out of the mold", meaning, go against the grain and not do what's expected of you.

Really, in that line though, "no mold here in which to believe" is referring to how some hold too much value in possessions...like people who value statuettes of Mary or Jesus moreso than they value their own internal beliefs on religion. Quoting The Edge, "I have no problem with Christ, but I have many problems with Christians". In my song, its very much a religious line.

And yes, Andrew- I do have music for this one.
  2. The night is long, and the winds are rough.
My hair it tussles, my resolve it scuffs.

I had a compass but i lost it to the vast and stormy sea.
Held on an Island prison, waiting to be free.

I miss my love, epic as the tempest.
She nursed my head like a mother with child to breast

I have a bottle of wine, and aged fine rum
to save me from the darkness, till kingdom come.

I have no love, but I do have my designs.
I keep them close to heart, i keep them in mind.

    (Sound of Church Bells)

and as the roaring cannons sound, come on now boys!
Let's take em' to the ground!

I take from art, like you from scripture
I find sweet serenade like violins, in a graceful figure.

A folded picture, of you in my pocket.
It's as close as I have to a shining silver locket.

I want to express my heart, on a global stage.
Have them taste my love, taste my rage.

I ask for help from religion, but I feel shunned.
I find more warmth, in the rifle and gun.

The war is fought within, between my love and sin.
Angels on my shoulders, let me win.

I have tasted the bane, of dirt dark deceit.
I rule the world from beneath 6 feet.

I wanted to save the land, I wanted to be the Hero.
I wanted to be Christ on earth, but I became Nero.

In a moment of clarity, the sand envelops me to my knees.
The stars never shine quite so brightly as when you freeze.

  3. Hey everyone, sorry about my posting hiatus. I haven't really had the time to work on any new songs, until today. I'll be sure to comment on everybody's latest in a bit.

Here is a little guitar bit to go along with the lyrics. I recorded it very quickly, so there are a few mistakes. Also, I forgot to cut out an 18 second silence in the beginning before saving, so just skip ahead to that mark.

    Battle

Every secret that you choose to tell
Every whisper that becomes a yell
Every prayer going straight to hell

    It’s alright

Are you the winner that you’re supposed to be?
Have you been programmed so perfectly?
    Does the perfection come naturally?

    It’s alright

The battle has just begun, but I feel the toll
Is it what you feel too?
The end is always in sight, it’s where you put up the fight
To what is breaking your virtues

Where is the difference between you and I?
Could you highlight the clearest divide?
Are my instincts a truth or a lie?

The world is turning is your mind still numb?
Show me progress and who you’ve become
Or how your prospects are your only freedom

    Wherever there’s a broken bottle
The reason is in the past
    Wherever there’s a bloody battle
You cannot ever see the next
It’s like the circle of life, just let it explain
Why in the end it’s living that kills you

    It’s alright
    Alright

The battle has just begun, but I feel the toll
Is it what you feel too?
The end is always in sight, it’s where you put up the fight
To what is breaking your virtues

    "Influence"

    Chokin' on your common sense
    You've got no given influence
    You're makin' money, makin' friends
Guess selfish never found an end

And I can see for what you're worth
All for better, none for worse
    Stealing hearts and breaking homes,
Just blood for someone else's bones

    [Chorus]
And you'll never see it, no
You're sweeping all that you can steal
    Busy looking down
When your feet should be on the ground
    You plead ignorant innocence
    To someone else's influence

    -
    Sittin' pretty on the fence
You've got no listed love for rent
    No possessions to receive
No mold here in which to believe

    [Chorus]

    Dollars dwindle into cents
You've bought back all your influence
I'm still learning how to walk
As I watch you stumble as you talk

    Workin' on your alibi
So you won't have as much to hide
But I'll never have to shed my skin
To show myself what I could have been

    [Chorus]

This looks like a really cool song, a nice rocker. I'd imagine that you have some sort of cool riff or something to go along. I'd love to see a bit of a demo. Great job, as always Matt. It's nice to see some of your work again.

This looks like it would be performed by pirates on a tall ship lol. It actually looks like it would be a better show tune than a "band" tune. I'd love to see a demo.
  6. Hey Nick! How is Impetus coming?

  7. Eh, pretty normally, I think. We were supposed to rehearse today, but it turns out that Rob extended his Ski trip without telling Josh or myself. Normally, this wouldn't really be a problem, but we are supposed to start recording in February. We plan to record two or three of the "rockier" songs live, as we will have the drum set mic'd up and all that jazz. However, in a separate recording club that my last year's English teacher started a few weeks ago, I'm starting to record everything else. I'm going to record more of a solo project there, as Rob can't make it into my school to record, and mic-ing the drum set would take way too much time and would produce lesser-quality tracks than the software that we use to create drum tracks creates. I would love to have the solo project ready before the summer. I'd like to get a nice EP down. Tomorrow, I'm going to record the majority of "Utopia" in there.

How has college been Matt? That's another huge part of my life now (finding colleges, scheduling tours, etc.).
  8. College is great. I find it actually harder to write lyrics now that I'm here...music comes easier because I'm relaxed living on my own, etc, but there was much more "drama" in those high school years...much easier to crank out certain lyrics and pull myself into depths. I'm having a great time here, which is excellent, it just makes it hard to throw myself into a poetic mood. Sad songs are easier to write than happy ones

I'm working though! Got about 3 or 4 complete songs written and laid out in my notebook; I'll post one or two of the lyrics up here soon. Hopefully this semester I can record 4 or 5 songs and put out an EP for summer. Who knows.

Ahh, glad to hear that everything is alright. Good luck with your studies and finding topics to write about lol. I know what you mean, with the happy ones, it's a bit more difficult to word and have the lyrics sound cool.

Best of luck with the EP!!!
  10. http://www.mediafire.com/?xz29cjp403okka8

Just spent 2 hours recording this....solo and a few of the lead parts are a little dusty, but I've literally written this all in the past 8 hours or so and put it together for the first time this morning. Good God, I'm so excited about this. Sounded so cool in my head, and is coming out exactly like I hoped. Rock on.

(Drums are a drum machine unfortunately, best I could do)
  11. And that is exactly how it sounds: COOL!!!!

I like it a lot, Matt, great job!!! I've played over it a lot and I like like like it. On the key of G (that's always a good point for me) and great to jam and play along. Are you planning to write any lyrics for it? If not, let me tell you that it would be a great show opener!!

PS. Damn you and your PRS guitar - I can't reach that super high note at 2:52, you play it on the 24th fret right? Ugh ¬¬....
