1. I don't think this album is underrated. It is highly overrated. Horizon is a better album but commercially Bomb was the big success so that's why Horizon is underrated.
+: Bomb has less filler songs, just one or two while Horizon and ATYCLB has planty.

Still, emotionally this album got me more than any other of their works.

  2. My opinion:

    1. Vertigo - 9.5/10
    2. Miracle Drug - 9.5/10
    3. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own - 9.5/10
    4. Love And Peace Or Else - 6/10
    5. City Of Blinding Lights - 9.5/10
    6. All Because Of You - 8/10
    7. A Man And A Woman - 6/10
    8. Crumbs From Your Table - 9.5/10
    9. One Step Closer - 5/10
    10. Original Of The Species - 9.5/10
    11. Yahweh - 8/10
    12. Fast Cars- 7.5/10

I do think it was fairly cohesive. It did follow a formula though.

    The Hit: Vertigo
    The Ballads: Sometimes, Original
The typical introspective song that most people skip: One Step Closer
The bastard son: A Man And A Woman
Great Songs that will not get the attention they deserve: Miracle Drug, Crumbs

There are some really great songs...SYCMIOYO is pure brilliance, and I really like LAPOE (which I hated at first). Then COBL, song that I'm personaly very emotional about, Vertigo, Original of the Species (Killahurtz Mix is awesome!)...

Too bad they fucked up production..

Other than the You Tube Video, is there any official way to get the

Original of the Species (Killahurtz Mix) ?
  4. It is by the fans certainly. After giving it a listen last week it has grown on me more, but I don't think its an astonishing album like the 90s albums, Joshua Tree and TUF.

    +1

I rate Magnificent, Breathe and Moment of Surrender higher than anything on HTDAAB, although I think that SYCMIOYO is a really great song. Vertigo is fun ,and Original of the Species, I think, is another (very) good song. The rest I'm not too sure (with the possible exception of Miracle Drug).

it was the first U2 album i bought on the day of release, listened to and felt pretty much nothing.. i think the only song that touched me on that first listen was sometimes you can't make it on your own.. after many more listens i came round to a few other songs but only briefly.. i soon realised that for me it didn't measure up at all to anything that came before it.. terrible lyrics, largely substandard songs and generic, meaningless thrown together imagery.

i haven't listened to that album for about 5 years and i can't see any reason why i ever will again...

(oh and in my opinion this album contains my personal official WORST U2 song of all time = a man and a woman)

That's a bit extreme... what about Grace and Peace on Earth? But yes, A Man and a Woman is quite awful.

I listened to the album a lot, but yes, it doesn't really measure up with TUF, JT and AB. But some songs on NLOTH (almost) do, and this gives me some hope...
  7. what's all the AMAAW hate for? sure, it's not their best, but it's hardly their worst either. it's just a simple acousticy little ditty, like this album's Wild Honey.

and All Because of You would be a good song if the lyrics weren't complete pap.

Agree in the AMAAW thing. In fact, A Man And A Woman, despite the awful title, is among the best songs of the album... The "I've been sleeping in the street again, like-a-stray-doggg" verse gets me everytime. Bono's strained vocals are quite odd, I'll give you that, but somehow it fits the song in my opinion. And last but not least, AMAAW has got one of the best post-Pop basslines I can remember.

  9. yeah grace and peace on earth are pretty bad and are up there with my all time least favourites but for some reason AMAAW beats them for me.. i don't know why but when i first listened to that song i disliked it almost to the point of anger!

to be fair to the people who are sticking up for it - i haven't listened to it since 2004 and you could count on less than one hand the amount of times i ever listened to it so maybe if i ever find myself with a spare few minutes and absolutely NOTHING better to do i will give it another listen...

  10. This was the first U2 CD that i ever bought... due to the fact i loved the single Vertigo so much... So it has some sentimental value to me honestly though I think it is a very good album... but to answer the question no i don't think the album is overrated here's my rating

    1. Vertigo 9/10 - Killer guitar riff and the first song that got me into the band.
    2. Miracle Drug 10/10 - Best song on the album hands down
    3. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own 9/10 - Only thing that stops this from getting a 10 is that when Bono hits the high note "SIIIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGG" you can hardly hear his voice it just blends into the sound. Thats why i rate the live version better vocallly but not intrumentally.
    4. Love and Peace or Else - 8/10
    5. City of Blinding Lights 9/10
    6. All Because of You 5/10 - I can see why they chose this as a single but it makes me cringe... Best part of the song is the bridge.
    7. A Man and a Woman 3/10 - Worst song on the album
    8. Crumbs From Your Table - 8/10 - Very underrated U2 song. Should've been given a bit more of a chance to shine on the Vertigo Tour.
    9. One Step Closer - 6/10 - Neutral on this song. It's never really done it for me...
    10. Original of the Species - 9/10 - Amazing song!!
    11. Yahweh 8/10 - Another song that i believe is underrated. Great closer to the album i feel

    Overall 7.6/10
  11. I have to add myself to the group of people who are pro-AMaaW... I think it's a really beautiful acoustic love song
  12. Yeah, I think A Man And A Woman isn't that bad either, better than Crumbs & One Step Closer IMO.
