I wouldn't have had them play Boots OR MOS, but they were just really smart with everything. Opening with Achtung Baby got the crowd rocking. I was afraid they'd be lukewarm at best, but they knew the words and weren't ashamed of singing them VERY loudly--esp. during One, the oh ohs of Pride and the end of Stay, the Streets chorus, Still Haven't Found--the list goes on (Damn, this band has so many instantly recognizable hits!!).

The qualms people have/are sure to have were (I think) mostly out of U2's control. A few tech glitches (but hey, it's a live show!), crowd WAS too far away to really "connect" as Bono would have liked, the b-stage reportedly too slippery to do much, Bono's voice getting slightly ragged (albeit it was mostly because he was SO into it), etc., etc.

I think much applause has to be given to Bono. He LOVES to talk and this obviously would have been a great soapbox for him to speak about politics, etc. (in terms of getting into the ears of millions, not in terms of the reception he would've gotten). He restrained himself from doing that and I'm sure that was difficult for him to do. He really worked hard to win the crowd over (thus his slight deterioration in voice as the show went on), which is something he hasn't had to do in decades. Despite the naysayers, I don't think that ANYONE can deny Bono's showmanship and frontman...ship(?) after tonight.

In all, really a tremendous show. The band have definitively proven that they can still kick some serious ass without relying on gimmicks. I think they really got the crowd going, probably surprising many of them with the sheer amount of hits and singalong moments in U2's songbook.

To those who disagree, I can only say I'm sorry that you didn't get to feel what I felt watching them on stage tonight. This may not have been a "defining moment" in U2's history (of which there have been several)--that's naturally quite arguable, but I think that it's certainly CEMENTED the long-perceived notion that U2 is the greatest live band ever, with the songs and stage presence to back it up.

Nailed it....just watched it on youtube. I love this band.

  2. i thought Bono sounded really good!! LOVE the snippet!!
  3. Just watched the videos that are up on YouTube. The Fly was amazing. Bono was on his game tonight, blew me away. U2 pulled it off and some! So proud of them!

    Thanks for the mp3 link!

  5. Yeah, Bono was on top form, as good as he's been in ages. You could tell how important this gig was to him. The addition of the mini catwalk was a clever idea. It's just unfortunate that the weather was so bad that it couldn't be used more than it was.

Word from the festival is that the wind played havoc with the sound at times. But look, Bono may be able to walk on water, but he still hasn't figured out how to control the weather. All in all, top marks!
  6. I hope I'm not the only one got chills on Out of Control.
  7. "CALL YOUR MOTHER"

  8. Finally finished reading all the posts I missed when I had to leave. Took a while. Couldn't be much happier with the setlist, performance, or crowd. Great nght for U2.

  9. I really don't think tonight was the night for Acrobat.

  10. Nope. Funnily enough, right before, while they were playing MOS, I said to my girlfriend "You know, they should really end it with Out of Control, but MOS is always their last song right now". And as soon as Larry and Adam started that pulse, I literally jumped for joy and went "wooooooooohooooo".

Completely loved the show. As people have said, sure, things could've been better, however all I can say is 10/10, I had a smile the entire show and goosebumps for more than a few songs. They did an amazing job, kicked ass the whole way, the crowd loved them, and so did I (as usual).

Proved once again why they're the greatest band, and why they're my favourite band
  11. Great night! I really want to see U2 in smaller venues and simpler stages again! This was awesome, I just missed some POP... but all in all it was great: 9/10! Bono, awesome! Just a note: did the Edge mess up Streets intro a bit?

Anyway, congrats U2 for pulling it off the best way!
