1. Surprised me too, I don't like the studio version but live it worked perfectly.
  2. OK, so Coldplay now relay on bigger lightshows a la U2?

I thought is what all about the music.

  3. I enjoyed both peformances, U2 was better for me because I like U2 more but Coldplay was awesome too.

    Its not a competition

I was speaking in general terms.

  6. lightshow was one of 3 points I mentioned. Why do you only pick this one? Agree about the rest?
It should be about the music, I agree. But both bands heavily play with lights, effects and visuals. And this time, I think Coldplay did the better job. That's all.

The U2 of 1992 or maybe even 2001 would easily have sacked Coldplay. But not in 2011 in the middle of a tour with heavy jet-lag.

Besides, I don't see any competition.
  7. wow, what a set.

i hate to admit it but they overshadowed U2 in a lot of ways, the energy was mental and the setlist was great. my first time hearing some of these new songs and they're all great, especially the opener, that was killer!
  8. I was hoping the would play Moving On Mars for the first time and I was hoping for a U2 snippet.
The latest piramide light show looked like it was Pink Floyd

As i said, only saw the encore. Still think Coldplay is slightly overrated, especially live. Some songs are up there with U2, but very few.

The reaction was as someone said always to be better than U2 at this festival.

    Clearly better weather today also.

    Interview atm.
  10. The better weather helped to the audience to be more receptive, as well as the fact that this was the fourth time Coldplay hit Glasto while U2 did it for their first time (and the first time in a festival in over 25 years)...

Nevertheless, I think that both setlists were a 8/10. U2's set has been discussed to death, so I won't go into it. But CP's tonight set has suffered from an excessive rollercoaster effect: combining old, less known tracks with hits with new songs with acoustic ones with... I enjoyed it a lot with the plus of being hooked onto my girlfriend at the phone so she could hear it too, so it was a very good show for me. But setlist wasn't that good, and of course not much better than U2's.
  11. Light show at the chemical brothers show is amazing,
  12. You can't really compare both bands. Coldplay are pretty much all from around Glasto itself, they've played there almost half a dozen times already, so they were already established. U2 came in having something to prove since they hadn't played a proper festival since 1983 or so. They had to win the crowd over, and did so with a bang, proving a LOT of people wrong. To me, it's really like comparing apples and oranges. Coldplay were great, but that was expected by the general public. U2 were great, but they had to fight their way to get there as Glasto virgins.

In terms of setlists, U2 have been around longer and have a treasure trove of hits to choose from. I mean, there's about 10 or so different songs U2 could've gone with that would be equally great (Desire, Angel of Harlem come to mind immediately). Coldplay must be given props (I guess) for playing a handful of new tunes, although they didn't really do it for me and I'm not sure that a music festival is a place to essentially debut new songs.

But overall, I don't think it's fair to say that one band was better than the other because, as I said, both bands excelled in very different ways and for different reasons.

That's my take on it, at least
