  1. Let's be clear - U2 are far and away the biggest band in the world. By a country mile in fact. I'll let everyone make their own minds' up on if they are the best or not.

I don't necessarily subscribe to the 're-invention' thing either. It's being banded about like it's a button you press to instantly change your musical direction. It's not quite as simple as that. U2 are now a band of 50 year old men - it's not at easy to continually be relevant and 'move with the times' as it was when they were 20 or 30. They re-invented with UF, AB, Pop and ATYCLB (back to early sound granted) - how many times do you think they can do it?!

Do they have great music left in them? I have no doubt they do but does that mean they need an overall of their sound and direction to achieve it? I don't think that it does .

One last point - lets see how many bands that around just now can span (and arguably) dominate 3 different decades of music whilst churning out top class material - not many, if any I'd bet.

  2. I don't think there is a "biggest" band anymore. Music industry and world in general has changed drastically in the last past years. Now, most of the people (young people, mostly) hardly follow a band for their albums, but for speciphic songs. And the lack of compromise between general audiences and the bands (e.g. people don't buy albums anymore, they just download download and download - most of the times for free) makes this connection even harder. The "biggest band" concept has disappeared, in the sense that back in 1987 U2 were everywhere, but now there isn't a band that's popular among all levels of the society, media, critics and everything else. Muse and Coldplay are surely the conventional rock bands that come the closest to that, but they can't say they're as popular as Led Zeppelin in 1973, U2 in 1987 or the like. The "biggest band in the world" title is wore out - and yes, the last band that has got it has been U2, back in 2001 when they were everywhere. But now things have changed - and people (including bands, and including U2) have to change their minds as well.

true.. they're re-invented themselves and music for the most soooo (tutu mode) many times .. i'd add No line for half part (or a bit more) .. for me it's not just a matter of reinventing but following their feelings and make music according to them and let the market follow them (as they're used to) not mostly following what they think it's the market expectations.
about the fact they still have great music in themselves, i'm sure of it .. turn off the dark partially shows this in my opinion.
even All that and the Bomb, for me their lower peaks, has some great music comparing to most of the 00's music.

i hate this about people these days. if a band only has one song worth having it's usually not that great of a song. there aren't too many one hit wonders that are actually good.

but with that being said, they still have the highest grossing tour of all time. if that doesn't make them the biggest band in the world i don't know what would.
