1. I'm sure I've been conditioned to think this way (through the media and album artwork) but JT feels American (vast deserts, early R&R/gospel sounds, etc) where AB feels very European (trabants, old-world urban decro, chic style, etc.) so when I think of JT I think of the USA but when I think of AB, I think of Europe.

Both albums are indeed brilliant. However, I feel that AB has aged better. I feel it could have been written last year while JT is definitely a late-80's album. Once again, I've probably just been conditioned to think/feel this way.
  2. Shit. We're supposed to be talking about a Pop remaster here.

  3. Please realize that the original post of this thread had the same sense as discussing Radiohead's discography or Picasso paintings here... There have been very few posts really regarding a potential Pop re-release, so I think it can go on like that.

  4. True.In only 6 years we can get a remaster of PoP,maybe they will give us an entire cd of super duper uber remixes and throw in the live in Mexico DVD that we already have. Can't wait.LOL .....
  5. cool a 6 year long thread about anticipation rumors news hehehe

CD sales have been going downhill the last 10 years. If any band (U2) included, wants to have some remasters made, the time is now, while the old fans are still willing to buy them. The reason No Line On The Horizon failed was 90% the fact that people just don't buy cds. Maybe 10% was not making "Magnificient" the lead single and some weaker tracks.

And yes, the thread was about Pop, not about The Joshua Tree. There are tons of posts about JT. Yeah, they probably will throw in the Mexico City DVD. If I could choose one, I would pick Sao Paulo if it had to be one. The reason I made a fantasy super duper deluxe version with Las Vegas, Edmonton, etc.. was to show the growth of the tour. Yeah, they probably would be too chicken shit to release Vegas. I have only heard the audio, but despite the mistakes it was great hearing the start of one of my favorite tours.

As far as Pop being a weak album, I think that's crazy. Cashtung Baby is my favorite, with Joshua and Pop right there. Those 3 are the only U2 albums that I don't have to skip a track. I hardly have to skip a track on anything else, but these 3 are the ones that I never have to. U2 had balls when they released Pop. It was only after the backlash that they changed their tune. My heart sunk when I read in Rolling Stone that they considered Pop to be the "hangover" instead of the party. Sad to see an album that they believed in is now in the corner. I find it ironic that they remixed "I'll Go Crazy" to sound like it came from Pop. They simply took a song that sounded like "Walk On's weak cousin," and made it sound like a mediocre Pop outtake.

In conclusion, if you can still find a used CD store, and look at the back of a used Joshua Tree, it has scratches all over it from being played too much. Pick up a copy of Pop, and it is crystal clear. It's hard to judge a cd that you have not listened to. I know some die hards here have listened to it, and still can't get into it...that's fine, but if you have not LISTENED to it (not just heard it), then you need to hear it all the way through 5 times in a month to get a clear picture. It is a truly great album, that will fade away with Hattle & Rum as a throwaway. A shame.

I think its great, that you love Pop.Most of us, have an album, that we love.My personal favorite,is War.It was the first album I bought, in March 1983.I was 16,and I still have that copy.Yes,the album (vinyl) I just dont like Pop,at all.I never have, and I never will. Its nothing personal.

The PoP tour,IMO,was ridiculous.Did we really, have to have a 50 foot Lemon ? The McDonald's arch? The 150 foot screen ? Then, much to my shock and chagrin, the band walked out of that same 50 foot Lemon, dressed up like the Village People.Quick question,WFT were they thinking there ??? I dont need any of that.Thank you very much.I want to hear the music and watch the band.We are talking about U2 here, not the fucking Spice Girls. They became a joke. Some, have suggested, the stage was to distract from the bad new songs.Maybe that was true.Q magazine, suggested the same for the 360 tour.Big,over the top productions, weak cd sales for both.

If the band,do indeed, like the songs from Pop,they should play them. When Pearl Jam released No Code,in 1996,I hated it.The release got bad reviews. The songs sounded dull.I couldnt hear Eddie Vedder at all.I saw the band live, that year, and the songs sounded so much better.Eddie Vedder said,"If you dont like the new songs, suck it,we are going to fucking play them".I thought that was great.I laughed. But I respected him for that.Pearl Jam,to this day, still play songs live from No Code.I still dont like the studio versions, but the live songs are fantastic.

    I feel the same way,in a sense,about Pop.The songs have more balls LIVE.Mofo,is a rocker,LNOE is good.As is Please.Live.

To add insult,to injury,we had to wait four years for Pop to be released. If you want to count Passengers, that just adds to my argument. If any U2 release, was rushed,it was Zooropa. It was recorded in a few months, and was rushed. It sounds rushed.Pop,IMO,does not sound rushed, its just not that good.

After the blip of Zooropa, the band chose to go even more overboard, with Passengers.I bought it,loved Miss Sarajevo, but thought the rest of it was just NONSENSE.They were doing whatever Eno wanted.I waited patiently, again, for 2 more years,we got....Pop.I did a major WTF ??? Truth,I was done with U2 then.It was as if the band, were intentionally trying to drive away their fans from the 1980s.The band didnt change for one release, this was now the 4th release, counting Passengers.Thats an entire decade of "experimenting".Thats a bit much no ?

U2 were a force in the 1980s,because of their unique sound. Then, they ran away from that sound. They "chopped down the JT".And lost many a fan.By the year 2000,they planted that tree up again.A forest full of them.Their catalogue of songs from the 80's, does not sound dated at all.The Beatles, experimented for 1 year,1967.Then,they went back to rock in 1968.Radiohead (who I love) have finally gone too far, with the King of Limbs. Its awful. Its not music. They havent even toured it this year.

Pop,sold well, upon its release.True.Thats because U2s base fans (like me) bought the release, without question. That,is why it went straight to # 1,in all those countries. Then,it died.Quickly.I have tried, many times,to get "into it". I cant.I get my fix of the Pop tunes from the Live Pop Please EP and the brilliant Sarajevo gig.

Again, this is just my opinion.Nothing personal to all the Pop lovers out there. But,obviously,by the half empty stadiums (in America) and (by U2s standards) weak sales of the disc, others agree.

    Including the band.
  8. The last two "posters" know their stuff and I respect both opinions. I'm a bit moody when it comes to Pop and its tour. Some days I think it's a diamond in the rough other times I think it's a lump of coal. I do like Leeds and Santiago, however.

Yeah, Radiohead blew it with their last album. However, listen to "The Daily Mail" (in it's entirity) and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Leeds and Sarajevo are fantastic live gigs from Pop.Miami, from Leeds I had on before. Is the Daily Mail a new track ? I have Supercollider and the Butcher. They are ok.Nothing amazing to me. The Butcher is one long drumbeat.I actually loved These Are My Twisted Words.I love that song.Guitars all over the place !!! That tune could go on for 20 min...

My question to Radiohead ,WTF ?? and where are the guitars ??...Is Ed Obrien still in the band ???
  10. Pop and Popmart will be recognized as absolute ingenious masterpiece by the upcoming generations like it happened to some artists whose genius wasn't valued in their contemporary times

a note for PJ and the No Code example ... Eddie and co. always play what they want and not what people want them to ... actually during a tour they play almost every songs they put hands on

Ed is still in the band turning knobs or whatever and so mostly Jonny
like i said when it came out, Limbs is much more a Thom Yorke album than a Radiohead one
  11. I really think Pop is one of those things you either get or you don't and no amount of explanation will make people get it. Personally, I think it's brilliant. I love the irony, the lemon-sharp critique, the aesthetic. But I am aware I'm not in the majority in this. I regard Pop as one of the cleverest things U2 ever did; I only wish they'd had the nads to stick by it in the face of so much criticism by people who just didn't get it.

  12. quote to infinite .. for other things you said too

    80's heart and soul
    90's genius and cleverness
    00's foxiness
