That gave me a very funny mental picture of some guy inventing DH Lawrence
  2. I've seen it now and while there were some genuine lulz, it's not as good as the book and veers off into some seriously WTF territory towards the end. IMO Neil comes off rather poorly in it (and FWIW he's fully aware of that and ok with it). It's worth a look, but I think it could have been a lot better.

Fully agree with what you have to say here. The book was fantastic and sad at some parts. You definitely just wanted the poor guy to get a record deal.

Movie was in serious WTF categories at parts. Nothing like the book, but really hardly any book-to-movies really keep the same story line. I was a little dissappointed. Neil comes off as a huge prick in the movie, too, which I don't quite think is deserved. The actor who plays Bono is very convincing, though.
  4. Just watched it the other night. Had some funny moments, Bono is actually played very well but it's nothing special to me. Might try the book.
  5. now i've read the book i can definitely say the film doesn't do Neil justice. it's an entertaining watch but i reckon it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.
  6. my sister downloaded this movie for me yesterday as a surpise, so now I have to watch it, I guess...I have a feeling the book will be better..

I loved the book. It was actually kind of sad at times because you really start feeling bad for Neil.
  8. I just watched the movie the other night, and I loved it. I know many here have said it has nothing on the book (Don't worry, it's on my christmas list) but seeing as how I haven't read it yet I can only talk about it as it is.

Bono WAS portrayed very well, sort of as "the bad guy" but not really a bad guy at all. He was the reason Neil did everyhting he did and screwed up everywhere he could have, but still, it was Neil's doing, not Bono's.

I'm fully aware that most of the occurences in the movie after the move to London are a bit fictionalized, but it was still really good. It was a real heart-wrencher at parts, especially near the end at the press-party or whatever, when Neil almost does something crazy (won't say what it is in case someone hasn't seen it). I presume that never happened in real life, or in the book, but still, it was somewhat believable as a fiction, and it made a good link to the scene where they discussed the death of John Lennon at the hands of a nutter. I almost cried in that scene, I felt so sorry for him. I can't really imagine being in that position myself, trying so hard to hate the person that became exactly what you wanted to be, when they're just so nice to you offering you a hand every step of the way (the record deal, the opening gig at Croke Park - (did this happen in real life? don't think so, but could be wrong).

Going into the movie I accepted the fact that there were going to be fallacies (I laughed afterwards when I realized that most of hte plot is derived from the fact that Ivan was asked to be in U2 by Bono) but I thought as a movie it was really good. It's impossible not to sympathize with the protagonist(s), and it was interesting to see how accurate the portrayal of Bono was. He did a great job.

I'm really excited to read the book now.
  9. Movie came out today on DVD in the USA and there's an exclusive blu ray version only at best buy
  10. I'm out tonight. The DJ is the brother of the chap who played Bono in this film. Just saying...
