1. i think its bono testing the water for the fan outcry with all this relevance bullsh#t.

1999 all over again for those of us with the point depot cassette in our collections, we have heard it before. i would ask you to consider two things....

1-a long touring deal with live nation.

2-the biggest tour ever done through a GLOBAL RECESSION. sold out, highest grossing etc etc.

this for a band considering themselves not relevant??!! personally i think he's fishing for compliments and spurring on the band to be inventive by laying down a challenge. just my thoughts..................
  2. Agree 100% with your comments........
  3. You know, looking at the top 5 albums, I'm actually not too dissatisfied at where music is going. I've listened to Gaga and Taylor Swift and while they aren't exactly my cup of tea, I think they are each the best in their genre. I'm also really glad that no (c)rap made it up there.

But seeing U2 get back up there again will be awesome! And I really think it can happen. Everybody has been talking about those turn-of-the-decade albums being really good (I know some people don't like ATYCLB, but in the early 2000s, especially after 9/11, U2, ATYCLB, and the Elevation Tour because EXTREMELY relevant in the US). I'm thinking we'll get the same thing in a couple years.

But first, I think they'll wrap up/scrap the album project they are currently working on (if I recall, they were thinking about releasing some of their other unused songs?).

But it's as that documentary said. In order to get to a new expression, they have to destroy their last expression. I'm just curious to see what carries over...

  4. Pop did. Singles released:
    1.Discothèque
    2.Staring at the Sun
    3.Last Night On Earth
    4.Please
5.If God Will send his Angels
    6.Mofo

    would've been great singles:
    7.Do You Feel Loved?
    8.Gone
    9.Holy Joe

    Zooropa came close:
    1.Numb
    2.Lemon
    3.Stay
    4.Zooropa - promo single edit

    excellent singles material:
    5.Babyface
    6.Some days

two hit singles (Miss Sarajevo and HMTMKMKM) weren't on Zooropa, but fit in well with the era.

    ATYCLB came close as well:
    1.BD
    2.Stuck
    3.Elevation
    4.Walk On

I'm sure that anyone of Kite, When I look at the World, New York and
The Ground Beneath Her Feet would have made a great single.

    add
5.non album hit single: Electrical Storm ('02)

    would also have been great:
    6.Stateless ('00).

I think you mean 1989. And I've never believed that rubbish "go away and dream it all up again" speech, since I went to see them a week later

  5. yea meant '89,i typed it as i was mad after reading the thread and all the younger members appear to be panicing. NOTHING TO PANIC ABOUT.

  6. It is realistic. Bono wanting a radio hit is less realistic than me just wanting them to
release everything. If it is in the valuts, all they have to do is press up some cds. The easy way out is to retire. Bono talks like they can have some huge radio hits at their age. The fact that Vertigo was a hit in 2004 with the band in their mid 40's was amazing, and sadly, it would be next to impossible to expect another hit like that when the market gets younger and younger, and the clueless music executives continue to push pop garbage. Unless they get the flavor of the month to guest on a single, no more big hits are even remotely likely. They should give back to the fans with good music, and not worry if it is a hit, or if it is relevant with young people. If they made a pop record with some modern sounds on it, I would be fine...if they cross the line to go way too commercial, then I may not be on board for it.

Saying that Bono should come to our homes to sign it is ridiculous and almost an insult to what I was saying in my post. My suggestion that they open the vaults is not impossible, in fact, as I mentioned, it is much easier than to believe that they can have a hit in the dead, clueless music industry. In the 1980's, an aging Paul McCartney and Rolling Stones still had hit singles..suggesting a blueprint that U2 could survive in their old age, sadly, the business practices of the music industry in 2011 have shut the door on old artists having hits.
  7. I think U2 shouldn't really be concerned with making number one singles as someone mentioned earlier in the thred people download them for nothing anyway.
What is unique about U2 is thta ALL their songs come over bettr and sound better live and there isn't a better band on this planet to rival U2 live......Bands have to tour to make money nowadays and there aren't many acts around that have enough material or let alone can perform their songs live.

being as "wise" as you because of our "sad" old age i have to quote you indeed
  9. They’ve got about 6 years left in them.
  10. If you consider the fact that they've shared the stage/studio with Mick&Keith, BB, Bruce, etc. or worked with Dylan,Sinatra, Tina Turner, etc. I'm sure they would've seen how to age gracefully and how not to...

Lovetown wasn't just the last tour to feature Edge's hair, it was also the last tour BB King did standing up.
BB's been touring since, though, but does everything sitting down. That didn't stop him from playing Glasto, at the tender age of 85.
  11. I think U2 thought this tour would make fans and non fans view 360 as something cool and cutting edge. Really, a lot like Zoo tv was....but the reality was a lot of hand wanted to see them play the classics and the cool stage was a bonus. I think many people went to hear the classics that brought back memories and U2 knows it. I loved the tour.
  12. They wont split just yet,i dont think the live nation contract matters much, contracts are meaningless esp if say 360 tour had been a massive flop that didnt sell, live nation could very well pull the plug on the deal,so the pressure to produce top gigs is there for them. But come on,lets look at the other side of the coin,360 was HUGE,theres so much money to be made from U2 gigs that theres no way they arent going to tour again.
The problem lies it seems in record sales, which in this day and age as you all mentioned is illegal downloading. Its a sign of the times and 5 mill sales is a good return for 2009.What we now need is better material than NLOTH,stuff thats gonna lift the roof off the arenas in the next tour, not this ambient stuff, leave that if its necessary for fanclub releases.
Rock music will never die but it certainly isnt the "theme" of the moment, and does their age REALLY matter? Susan Boyle was top seller in 2009 and she isnt exactly part of todays youth movement.
Songs like Breathe,Crazy Tonight and Unknown Caller were all good tunes but can you see these songs on future tours? I can only see Magnificent or maybe MOS appearing again.
Get On Your Boots was abysmal sorry,it came to life a bit live but it still makes me cringe esp the "sexy boots" bit.
Dont panic guys its NOT the end!
