Believe me, I have. I even tried watching Linear a few weeks ago and had to turn it off, despite the fact that it has a better running order and tracklisting than NLOTH does!
  2. The only songs on NLOTH that I can't stand are Breathe, Stand Up Comedy, White As Snow, and Cedars of Lebanon.

In the flip side, I think No Line On The Horizon (song) and Moment of Surrender are not only the best songs on the album, but possibly rank up there with the classics.

Now that I think about it, the album really reminds me of Pop in that you have great songs intermixed with terrible songs and it makes you wonder how they were put on the same album. The only difference is that Pop has more terrible songs than great ones.

    Chill out, man.

  5. surely it's appropriate to examine past failings when speculating on what direction the band go. I hope the band spend some time listening to their recent albums before they record a note for the next album. bono talks of relevance and the 'desire, the need to be great' and that U2 cannot be just good. the truth is that the none of the albums mentioned were great and some were just about good. I still think they have greatness in them. I had the good fortune recently to meet a guy who has recorded u2 in the studio in the past, and he said they are currently recording in the studio but have trashed a load of material already, so perhaps there's some serious searching going on for new sounds or else they are very unsure of themselves
  6. One thing is examine past happenings and other thing is doing a complete analysis of all the past decade albums. This is NOT the topic to do that This topic is intended to share info and rumours about upcoming album, and maybe some side discussion about dates and styles (including past albums maybe). But let's focus basically on the new album.

I actually think it's totally relevant to discuss opinions about past albums because it reveals perhaps the number one struggle that the band will have to deal with when they create this new album. Because U2 has such a diverse fanbase, it's extremely difficult to please everybody. Furthermore, it's even more difficult to determine which direction to take. Do you proceed to please the "casual listener" at the risk of alienating the hardcore fan? Even if they decide that they want to appeal to hardcore fans over causal listener, do you build upon the modern feel that some fans (such as I) love or do you return to past themes that older fans enjoy?

You see this theme in other bands too. For example, Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto has actually caused quite a rift among fans. Some like their new direction and see it as a fresh turn while others believe the band is trying to bury their past style and is selling themselves out.

I think they'd benefit from releasing a record or two without feeling obligated to tour in support of them. the price of being so big is the output of albums is pretty low for the length of time they've been around. the expectations weigh so heavily that every move they make becomes too considered and the music sounds laboured as a result. the released work of late is so heavily over produced. I wonder can they not think about the audience and make great music again instinctively?

is relevant to the new album? I only tried to tell you to stay on focus. This isn't a "Review the past X albums and rate them according to Y factors" topic, that's all

I don't think the band ever feels obligated to tour in support of their work, but rather touring is the reason why they produce new material.

    It's their instint to tour.
