I don't see them dropping Vertigo, I feel like he's going to attempt "shouting" the song until the very end...
  2. I dont mind the way he shouted Vertigo, I guess...the song was so intense that I was okay with it.

But now that you say so, I'd actually really love to hear a more musical version (vocally, anyway) of Vertigo. Even the performances of it on the Vertigo Tour weren't particularly impressive vocally.
  3. Yeah I don't mind it either, it's a proper rock song so it technically works. I kind of wish they'd extend it, or even remix one day. The siren sound on 360 was an improvement, maybe a more epic intro and the extended ending from the Vertigo tour would be awesome

Alright, so the story goes like this: 4 years ago in 2009 (Jesus, so long ago already?) I sat down and wrote out three predictions that I thought U2 would work over for their next tour. Two of them, I had in my head before the tour was announced, and the third came after I saw the stage. They were The Unforgettable Fire, Electrical Storm, and Ultraviolet.

I've been trying to use this false sense of accurate-prediction lately to assess what U2 might do on their next tour, and since this place has been a little slow lately I thought this might generate even more buzz and give newer members a place to experience our live-U2 talk, which usually ends up being the site's finer moments in my opinion.

So, post away your thoughts, predictions, supports, arguments, ideas, etc....

    1. Two Hearts Beat As One

I think with the War anniversary this year and the fact that the band is not shy about the album (SBS, New Years Day, 40, Drowning Man), this is a definite possibility. The song wouldn't work in a stadium setting, and with U2 playing arenas you usually get multiple nights - at least in larger markets. I can see this not being a solid regular, but brought out on nights where they have wiggle room.

    2. Hawkmoon 269 OR A Sort of Homecoming

I think there's an honest chance we see a stripped down version of Hawkmoon. The problem with Hawkmoon is, like Zooropa, they'll never play the whole thing. It's too damn long to them, and even though it's one of my top 10 favorite U2 songs, the drive is a bit one-dimensional even though it is extremely powerful. They would either need an insane visual or a theatric performance (think the end of UTEOTW on the Elevation Tour) to properly deliver this song.

But, I really think they could manipulate the song and do a front-of-stage, "Desire"-like performance where Larry brings out a tom and they scale the song back...maybe give Bono one of the shouting verses before pulling back and going into a warhorse or new song. Similar thing with ASOH....we aren't going to hear a full band performance, but I can see it being performed by Bono and Edge just before Pride (sensible) or even Streets! Hell, wouldn't that be awesome?

    3. Lemon

I cannot think of a better themed encore than a dance party for U2. The lights are all out, and deep blue lights start to shine through fog- they drop a disco ball down and the band comes out and opens the encore with "Lemon". Perhaps from there, we get something dance-y from Pop like "Discotheque", or a new track from the album that might have a hipper track on it. Would it be terrible to get a remix-medley? 2 minutes of a Boots remix, segueing into "Daddy's Gonna Pay", and leading into a regular performance of "Mysterious Ways" to close out the first encore? Who knows. But with "Lemon" reportedly being rehearsed for the Vertigo Tour, we know the song isn't completely out of their sightlines.

There's a whole damn list of stuff I want but I know I won't get (Please, Kite, A Day Without Me, Who's Gonna Ride), but I'll save some of those for the discussion

    It's a good list.

To me, "Two Hearts..." seems to have been written out of U2 history. It wasn't represented on either "Best of U2: 1989-1990" or U218: Singles.

I doubt they will play it again. Edge has said he doesn't like playing it.

Hawkmoon 269 would be fantastic. I'd add "God Part II" to that thought. It's a shame that for the most part, they've ignored a lot of Rattle And Hum. There IS more to the album than "Desire", "Angel of Harlem" and "All I Want Is You". I wish they'd consider that.

I doubt that there will be a remix bit in the middle again. I think that comes under the heading of - Been there. Done that.

That said, sadly... and as history shows... albums have been criticized - seem to get forgotten when it comes time to pick songs for their set lists. (October, Rattle and Hum & Pop spring to mind). With that history, I doubt there will be much of No Line On The Horizon that will get played on the next tour. (Probably "...Boots" and that is about it).

I know that they pick songs that seem to 'make sense' in the context of the latest album and the concept of the tour - Even older tunes that were played on Popmart were 'updated'.

If they asked my advice - as a longtime fanI'd say that - it would be super-cool if you (U2) worked hard on about 40 songs (at least) and mixed the sets up a bit, like Bruce, Pearl Jam and DMB do.

I get that many that attend shows are 'the casual fan' and not like many here. There are some songs that seem 'phoned in'. I think that is because they are tired of playing them. It was good that they gave "Bullet..." a rest. Maybe it's time to rest (or not play for every show) NYD, Pride, One, Mysterious Ways, Beautiful Day. THEY ARE ALL GREAT SONGS.... but I think it could be more fun / interesting for them if they were to shake things up a bit. There would be nothing wrong with playing Pride one show and New Years Day the next - Or Bullet one show and Sunday Bloody Sunday the next...

If they were to entertain such and idea, it would create space in the setlists for less played or never played songs.

ALL OF THAT SAID - NEVER SAY NEVER!

I never thought I'd see / hear them play "An Cat Dubh / Into The Heart" again. But in 2005... So I guess we can hope that they will consider the idea of 'variety'... I hear it's the spice of life.
  5. Luminous Times, Night and Day, Promenade (if they did Scarlet, why not Promenade?), Hawkmoon 269, Velvet Dress, Please -- if properly reworked, it'd be nice to hear these songs from time to time.
