1. Yeah and I spoke to him in September and he told me album around February lol

  2. Ditto when I spoke to him a few weeks later!!!
  3. Speaking after last night's appearance on The Tonight Show, The Edge told Rolling Stone's David Fricke that U2 has about 30 songs "that we're excited about, in various states of being finished" and "six or seven [of those] are mixed and ready to go."

Fricke writes that the album is still "tentatively" set for release this summer, and that U2 was headed back to Dublin after last night's performance to get back in the studio.

About the band's songwriting process, Edge says "...we're so good at starting, not so good at finishing. That's always the way it's been. We don't abandon our songs if we really believe there is something there. We're going to keep pushing. We just don't give up."

Time for U2 fans to decide if the glass is half-empty or half-full. A discussion on Edge's comments is already underway in our forum -- feel free to join in.

  4. I think the less we think about the album, the better; let's enjoy what we've got.

My two cents, given the two new songs we've heard: U2 can still write very good music, yes; but the new material won't be JT or AB like. Maybe they're not quite young enough anymore, maybe it's not quite the time for rock n roll, maybe great songs are not quite flocking by the minute, maybe a mix of all these things - who knows. I really like Invisible, but, like the recent survey confirmed, most of us think it's no WOWY, Bad, SBS, AIWIY, EVBTTRT, MW and so forth.

I'm quite happy with that, though! It is a really great song, and U2 are still the biggest, and best, band in the world!
  5. 6 or 7 done and ready to go is good! But I'm assuming there's going to be 4 or 5 more songs for an 11-12 song album. That's unfortunate But I trust U2 in working very hard the next few weeks, or month or so and Im very optimistic about an April single to kick off the new album.

"We're in the studio still," The Edge admits during that dressing-room interview when asked about U2's progress on the new album. The record was expected to be out last December; it is now tentatively set for release this summer. But the Edge will only confirm that "we really want the songs to be right. That's the only reason why we're not on tour – because we're so good at starting, not so good at finishing. That's always the way it's been."

The guitarist says the band has around 30 songs "that we're excited about, in various states of being finished." Of those, "six or seven are mixed and ready to go." There is "a common thread" too – "the period of music, in our lives and history, when we really came into being, turned on by music, the seeds that made us want to be in a band.

"The thing about U2 songs," The Edge continues, "is there is no set way they come into being. A couple of songs on the album have literally been like, 'We're all together, here's some chords, let's see what happens.' And suddenly, an hour later, there is a song, an arrangement and a recording. Other things, you know there is something great in there, how to make it really count.
  7. It's really hard to say whether or not they're BSing and it'll be out very soon, or if it's really still not done and won't be for a little while. How the hell could it not be done though? They've literally been working on this for 3 years now. 3 years to write about an hour's worth of music.
  8. I would definitely discard the idea that they're doing a Bowie and releasing it out of the blue - or anytime soon, fwiw. I think the fact they're flying to Dublin without partying after a huge public success like Fallon show speaks by itself.

Very true. At least it seems as though they're really working on it now rather than dillydallying about other crap and talking about the album like it's a passing project.

    Get er' done boys!

Yep, totally agree about this. I wouldn't expect this month, which leads to the Oscars, to be specially productive for them, but I think they're going to get it done between March and April, they seem to be pretty focused on it, and that's all they need. Focus.
  11. someone on twitter said: they've been working on this one since 2008. that's one song a year.
