1. I don't think this song can replace Iris. The two are too different to be compared, but I think Iris works better in the context of the rest of the album.
  2. Terrific tune but doesn't in my humble opinion doesn't fit on SoI - it's just a different direction. After NLOTH I'm glad they didn't repeat putting tunes together that didn't quite work together - you'd have an album less than the sum of its parts.
  3. Like most of you said, you can't compare this one to Iris...
Ok, same subject, totally different style.

    This.

Plain and simple the song would've stood out too much.
  5. I didn't compare the tracks in the first place.

I just said that, if they had to choose between two songs about Bono's early loss, it should have been the awesome one, instead of the cheesy one. Just my 0'02€

Mhmm. (I like Iris better, too....)
  7. Actually, if this song had replaced Iris on the album, it would have further highlighted the fact that the album shares a unified lyrical theme presented in a vast array of musical styles. Thinking back on my initial opinion, I think the reason I feel more strongly about Iris being on the album is because that's the way U2 presented it to us. I also think the connection to Bono's mother is much more prevalent in Iris, but the lyrical content of Crystal Ballroom would have also fit well on the album.

I'm actually a bit curious as to how that switch would have gone because I feel that our current opinions are obviously influenced by the fact that we had all heard Iris first. If it were the other way around and Iris were the extra song to be released, would we still feel that Crystal Ballroom is a stronger song?
  8. Definitely hard to say..I just feel as though Crystal Ballroom "sounds" like a b-side if that makes sense. It's a great stand-alone song, but I'm not sure how well it would've fit on the album..where would it have gone?

Also, it's virtually impossible to say for the simple fact that we've already heard the album in the way the band presented it to us.

I think the main thing to take away is that why squabble over it? We finally have new U2 music and not only that, it's GREAT U2 music. Stick the bonus tracks on your ipod under the album and problem solved.
  9. Totally agree. In the end, we're all winners because there are actually songs to talk about.

Remember when the biggest U2-related topic of discussion was Adam's hairstyle? Also, the fact that we now have something under the "upcoming shows" notification is really amazing and makes me irrationally excited.
  10. I think the real reason the song did not end up on the album proper, even though it is excellent, is it sounds way too much like "Love Is The Drug" by Roxy Music.
  11. Haha wow you're right! Different enough, but still.
  12. CRYSTAL BALLROOM is The Black Keys not U2
