So what you mean is you want to play just the songs from your iPod on your computer.

If so, drag all the songs onto the iPod (if they're already there then no worries about that). Then select just the iPod from the Source Menu and start playing. Is that what you mean, or not? Or a Playlist might work too...though I never set one up.

I thought the nano had more than 2GB memory on them?

tick manually manage. I think that will just let you grab a load of songs and just drop them on to your ipod in the devices menu on the left in itunes

Nope, got me wrong...that's what iTunes already does, it plays only the checked items.
What I mean is I want my selected 2GB of music to be on the iPod, but I want to listen to the whole library (12GB of my mp3s are in the iTunes library) when using the computer, either checked or unchecked songs.

It might be worth using Manually Manage Songs as Gerard already said.

    Yep that's right...

What I mean is I want my selected 2GB of music to be on the iPod, but I want to listen to the whole library (12GB of my mp3s are in the iTunes library) when using the computer

If the songs are checked in that 12GB library they'll play. If they're unchecked then they won't play. So if you uncheck 6GB worth then that 6GB won't play - only the other 6GB which are supposedly checked will play. And it doesn't look like there's a way to change it either.

    And according to CNet:

Uncheck songs in the iTunes Library, and they won't show up. (Unchecked songs do not play in iTunes by default. They play only when double-clicked.

I just did a test now and I unticked several songs and iTunes just went on by - it didn't see them. But if I do re-check them then they will play.

    An iLounge.com article shows this:

You can create a playlist using subtraction:
Playlist "All Checked" is "length is greater than 0:00" match only checked songs.
Playlist "All Unchecked" is "Playlist is NOT All Checked" and DO NOT CHECK "Match only checked songs".
Then, to create playlists from the All Unchecked:
Playlist "Mad Polka" is Match ALL "Playlist is All Unchecked" "Genre is Polka" limit to 25 hours.

Close to what you mean, I think.
  6. Yep...guess I'll have to play around with the playlists then...would have been easier if they had just put a "Play unchecked songs? [ ]" checkbox in the playback options.

A simple checkbox. Not too hard.

I have all my boxes checked and I only sync 1GB to my shuffle. The rest play fine on my computer

The way I manage my smaller players (including the Touch) is to have a load of playlists. When the shuffle, nano, whatever, is connected then you tick manually manage as Gerard says.
Then go to the music tab and tick the 'selected playlists' box. Then choose which playlists you want on your iPod. It will copy just those.
For my Nano I have a Nano playlist that is a smart playlist and it automatically drops a song after it's been played and randomly picks another one from my library. This way the music's always fresh. But if you'd rather keep the same songs, manually create a playlist and do as above.

    I've never deselected songs.

Hope this is clear. Ali, if you're still having trouble then PM me and I'll take you though it further.
