    Why not celebrate hi-fi recordings?

    Hi-Fi recordings don't grow on trees and take skill + money + time to develop.

    I consider the cell phone broadcasts a novelty for a live listen, but not intended or designed for long term listening. If doing that, then at least get a basic microphone rig. Such as the hobbes4444 recording(s)
  5. The main intention – as stated in the above (page #4) – is to celebrate the joy of the U2 concerts together. Low-fi (mixlr-broadcast/cellphone) recordings are – at best – a means, but in principle a symbol of that joy & togetherness.

    But more practically – or "pragmatic," if you like – good “hi-fi” recordings don’t need remastering. The only thing that I add is a bootleg title + artwork cover (those designs can be found in this topic) and everyone is free to dress up their personal music system as they like. For instance, take the Hobbes4444 “Boston 1” mp3’s and tag them with the title “Audio Only” and add the cover that can be found in that ‘i+e’ cd/dvd cover topic – like I did – or design something of your own (and share it too!).

    From that pragmatic point of view you could also say that I take care of those recordings that are rated 2nd best (or lower…) and ideally are back in competition with the aid of a little remastering. Or, in other words, my project celebrates diversity (and, in a way, gives voice to the subaltern of audience recordings).

    The other thing that one needs to take into consideration is the fact that this topic (or this “art-project”) is part of u2start, a website that is dedicated to sharing + enjoying u2.
    Of course there is attention (and praise!) for high quality recordings – but the BEST always gets praise. The challenge of this project here is to appreciate also the “lesser.”

    So, finally, to answer your second question in so far as it isn't answered already, the celebration of hi-fi recordings takes place all over the place (u2start, but also u2t's). And this is perfect: the BEST is decentralized (scattered & enjoyed all over the place); the LESSER is centralized and appreciated in a different way.

    The irony - yes of course there is irony, I'm a Continental Romantic! - the irony is that the low-fi recordings of the occasional taper with their common gear (e.g., cellphone/smartphone) are being enjoyed by the elite who cares about diversity and the problem of the subaltern (= a very u2-ish problem btw, think, for instance, of the One-campaign, the drop-the-debt and even [RED])

    please enlighten me what's the difference of selling a show you taped or getting paid to tape a show? lol.
    you hoard shows, most of them will never see the light of day
    me, I make all my recordings available and I have no double standards

    Basically, profit and selling of product. If somebody wants to cover my expenses in doing a show, then they also absorb the risk of taping. I could screw up and not get the recording, which is an occupational hazard. Selling of product is a different scenario. Plus you're selling the work and time that you put into the product.

    So yes, if somebody wants to fly me out to MSG and take a reasonable shot at getting a good quality recording of the show from a quality taper, sure. That's different than me selling copies of mixes for $25 a pop.

  11. The labour has to be love...covering expenses for ones hobby seems ethically legit - but where does one draw the line? Does the expenses include food and shelter? To compensate for the concert ticket seems fair, and to fly your taper in too - but he/she needs to eat, drink & sleep as well (and taxi fare?).
