Viva was most likely their Achtung Baby. If you listen to their works before and after that album, it's very clear that Viva indicated a huge shift for them. Whether that new direction is good or bad is still up for debate deep within the Coldplay fanbase today. Biggest example of that is MX, the album that divided their fanbase unlike anything I've ever seen as a lurker there.

Regarding this song, I've learned to not judge an album based on the lead single. Just look at NLOTH. Many would argue that Boots was not the lead single we were expecting, but I think most people view the album quite favorably at this point.
  2. Yes, I keep an open mind. The song isn't that bad. But it's nothing like the best songs of the previous album. I think Coldplay do their best work when they don't try to be catchy, or relevant. Paradise was a big single, but is it a good song? Always in my head scores way higher in my book.
  3. I watched the live performance of the song and I think it has a pretty good dance vibe to it and the guitar riffs are really catchy. The vocals are average, not terrible, up until the bridge. I can't explain why, but I really like the vocals at that point.

I think with this song they've succeeded in producing something that is entirely different from any of their previous work while still letting you know that it's Coldplay. Whether or not it's good is each to their own. I will say that when people comment on this song being "mainstream" it leaves me really confused because I'm not sure if people have actually listened to what is considered mainstream nowadays or if they are calling an entire genre "mainstream" or if they are deciding that it's mainstream because Coldplay is a popular band and therefore everything they produce is instantly mainstream.
  4. Sounds like something Last Dinosaurs (an indie Aussie band) would write
  5. I really love the new song - love the india influence - the groove really gets me -
