1. Just started listening to the new album...I am not loving it so far
  2. Ok, Birds was alright. But Hymn for the Weekend was not.
  3. is nobody gonna mention the annoying subtle click track in Birds or
  4. Haha.

That was a bit of an easy bet though considering how AWFUL THAT SONG IS OH MY GOD.

Coldplay are like the Jay Z and Beyoncé of "rock/pop" now.

The only songs I can *really* defend from this album are AHFOD and Up & Up, mostly Up & Up.

Studio wise? Probably. I still throw them under alternative/rock, with pop tendencies.

I read something that Coldplay took a page from listening to stuff in 2012 and going from there, but, what's so bad about that? It works.
  6. Still haven't listened to the new album, but at the same time I'm not willing to buy into the opinions of anyone who said Ghost Stories was a boring album.

awful song yes, but what about "amazing day"? 'my heart went boom-boom'
  8. music for dancefloors ,coldplay are returned a boyband. I miss old albums
  9. it's like MX part 2, but infinitely lower quality.

i've defended them up until now, but this is their first all-round bad album - how can the band that made the epic, arty, anthemic VLV record come up with this hollow, chart-hungry cringefest?

the title track and AOAL are alright for what they are (throwaway pop singles, essentially retreads of Sky Full of Stars), but i can't imagine i'll be going out of my way to listen to any of the other tracks in future.

maybe it'll grow on me, but until then it's time to put Parachutes on and mourn.
  10. coldplay is going to play live TONIGHT in Germany... the show is going to be streamed... it starts in about 30 minutes! check it out:
  11. A Head Full of Dreams: First time listening

A Head Full of Dreams: Totally unlike any iteration of Coldplay we've seen before. The song feels very fresh and uplifting, super easy to listen to. The guitar melody is very catchy and gives the song a nice flow. It sounds like a song I wouldn't mind listening to a lot, but not necessarily one I would go searching in my playlist for. 7/10

Birds: As an aside, I don't know why the band is so fixed on birds as a theme/title. Between three albums, there are now 3 songs of or pertaining to birds (Up With The Birds, O, and Birds). The first thing that comes to mind is the guitar work. To me, it's the number one draw factor. It's an average song, but the ending is so abrupt I initially thought it was a file corruption error. 6/10

Hymn for the Weekend: This is probably their most Pop sounding song to date, even more so than all of MX. I'm not quite sure where I would place it right now, but I'm not willing to completely shut it out just yet. The lack of guitar presence makes me sad though. 6.5/10

Everglow: The piano driven melody is really nice since it feels like its been a while since they've done it. I think the vocals are quite fitting for this song. Overall, there's a great mood to this one. I can definitely see myself picking out this song from a playlist. 9/10

Adventure of a Lifetime: At this point, I think this was the best song for them to choose as the lead single to introduce the album. It's not as strong as Everglow, but presents the tone Coldplay seems to be taking with this album. The title song would have made a decent lead single, but this song is simply catchier and features much stronger guitar segments. I like the energy driving this song, but again I wouldn't find myself picking this song out of a playlist. 7.5/10

Fun (feat. Tove Lo): This song actually surprised me. I found myself enjoying it without having much to write about. I'll probably come up with reasons later, but after one listen I'm hooked. 8.5/10

    Kaleidoscope: ???? 0/10

Army of One: My initial reactions to this song were confused before I realized this file contains a hidden track (which I'll discuss later). Anyways, this song is another one of their pop sounding tracks. Similar to Fun, the song simply has a good feel to it. I like CM's vocals here as well. 8.5/10

X Marks The Spot (Hidden Track): This hidden track should have remained hidden somewhere not on the album because it totally ruined my Army of One experience. The one redeeming factor is that track splicing software is readily available. -10/10

Amazing Day: This is probably the most average song on the album, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It simply doesn't stand out much. I wouldn't mind hearing it on the radio, but I won't be going out of my way to put it into my own playlists. 6.5/10

Color Spectrum: One minute of sound. Note that at least the "mini songs" of MX were intros to the next track. I still think it was stupid of them to split them up like that though. 0/10

Up&Up: To be honest, I wasn't really moved by this song mainly because I really dislike the pacing it took. I don't know what the musical term for it is, but songs with that particular rhythm just bother the heck out of me. It doesn't feel like the song is actually going anywhere. I'll keep it around to see if it grows on me. 6/10

Overall: After listening to the album as a whole for the first time, my immediate reaction is that this is an average album. It has very good songs that I will be moving into my playlists immediately, but it also has a lot of songs that don't move me too much. If I were to rank their three most recent albums, I would put it at the very bottom. Their new style didn't have as much vibrancy as Mylo Xyloto and it didn't have a clear narrative like Ghost Stories. This isn't an album that should make you mourn the death of Coldplay (unless you are diehard into Oldplay, in which case RIP in peace), but rather this should be an album that tells you "ok, Coldplay can still produce music." 7/10
