Even though there are a lot of plot parallels, I felt it was a very key aspect of the entire Star Wars narrative. If you are watching the movies from I -> VI, you can see the trend of new generations being forced to deal with the same struggles. Anakin struggled with the darkside just as Luke did, and maybe just as Kylo Ren is. The Starkiller base modelling the Death Star is also highly symbolic of the hubris of the First Order and how they view themselves as a better incarnation of the Empire.
In general, there were common themes to be seen between VII and IV/V, but there are also a lot of intricacies that developed as a direct result of what happened in VI. It's also very interesting because the movie sets up this moment as one where there is "balance" in The Force in that there is no Jedi Order and no Sith.

Actually, there's a scene in the movie where Han Solo basically say this when the Resistance is planning their attack on the Starkiller Base.
