The best example of this that I have witnessed was the Queen + Lambert. Everyone knows it was 1/2 of Queen (and yes, there can not be any Queen without Mercury) + that singer... I don't know what word to use not to be rude... he was just the most terrible thing I have ever seen at a concert... But I went to see them, since I wanted to see May and Taylor. And they were both great actually, but trying to ignore that... well, Lambert, was a difficult job. Anyway, what I want to say is that they had absolutely no problem with selling out arenas wherever they went, just because the word "Queen" was on the tickets. May is actually returning to our country again this year, but it doesn't say Queen on the tickets and the tickets don't sell pretty much at all.
Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger chose a different approach - I don't know kow much it was sincere and how much it was due to the law suit with Densmore :-), but it was exactly the same case as with Queen - half of the band without the singer. But they didn't print The Doors on the tickets, it was actually billed as "Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors." The tickets here were about 35E and they were supposed to play that small arena that I saw Slash in. They had to move the gig into a club, because the tickets didn't sell. I am sure if it was just The Doors printed on the tickets, they would sell out the big O2 arena without any problem and nobody would complain, since I think that the Manzarek / Krieger combo was very well comparable with May / Taylor, only Ray and Robby had waaay better singer, who actually did a great job.
It shows that many (maybe even most) people go there just to be able to say "I saw G n'R, Queen, The Doors..." and how much are they willing to pay just for that. Isn't it sad?
