The interest in the band seem to decline during those years - especially by the end of 1993. I will concede, however, they were so big at the beginning of the nineties that it would have been impossible to maintain that level of success even if "grunge" hadn't come along.
very few bands can claim that level of success at some point of the career.
if Axl. Slash and Duff had been a real band ("friends") they would have said their own, not meaning only for the music; with the physiological up and down of course.

interestingly they are unique ... I don't remember a band before or after that had a sound like they had. and even what axel called gnr afterwards needed 3 guitarres to get that sound ...
Yeah, the sound of Appetite For Destruction was like no other. Heck, even "Patience" (from Lies) seemed a big step ahead of other rock ballads like Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" or Warrant's "Heaven."
