My daughter has a mild disorder and the only reason she gets the therapy she needs is
because of no child left behind.

Honestly neither Obama nor HIllary are any different from the other candidates......

I think I'll just vote for McCain - the lesser of many evils.....

I meant no disrespect to your daughter or to anyone who has been assisted by the act. I think the intent of issuing it was certainly admirable, and for those it has helped, like your daughter, that's fantastic. The repercussions of it, though, especially here in Massachusetts, have really strayed from its originally intent. It's a pendulum--before, kids with cognitive disorders were "left behind," and now the pendulum has swung the other way where kids without disorders are the ones being left behind. I saw it in the school I taught at, and my mom, who works with kids with autism, sees it everyday--the kids with various learning disabilities are essentially being babied to the point that they're not being challenged to their full pontential, and neither are the kids without learning disabilities. It's really an awful, awful system.

There's also the absurd amount of mandatory standardized testing initiated by the act that disrupted all ofthe curriculum for us teachers, and subsequently put the kids at a disadvantage also--but that's another discussion entirely...

Again, I meant no disrespect to you or your daughter--I'm glad she's aided by the act. I do think it needs to be repealed completely, however, if we're going to stop what myself and many teachers and parents see as this pendulum.

He was certainly the lesser of Romney. Did you see his concession speech? All the bullshit about "we are at war." Really Mitt? With whom? "We are at war with terror." Ah. Right. Terror. That narrows it down. Shall we invade Terror's country and force them into a democracy? Who will take over when Terror has left the building? Yes, Mitt, and Bush, Terror looks like a mean enemy...

If McCain is elected, I think I'll move to England.
  3. No child left behind can easily be a pendulum - but thats not necessarily the system, so much as the people running it.....

I live in Upstate NY, and I dont understand what people see in hillary. She hasnt done anything for us.

Obama? He got elected to an office and within something like 6 months he was campaigning for another office. What has he really done in the office he has now? I keep hearing people say that he will get more younger voters out to vote. Are we sure that this is a good thing? These are the young voters I see at work who just live to party and get drunk - I dont want them deciding the next president.

Yeah, GWB has screwed things up pretty bad, but I dont think that Kerry or Gore being in office would have made much of a difference.....

Don't worry, this campaign is far from over, and Hillary has many supporters. People will continue to vote.

Yes, the people running it (that is essentially the Department of education--they throw this stuff in front of him and he signs it) are part of the problem. But the system is so large it runs independently of those seeming to be in charge of it, if that makes sense (that sort of gets into Marxism, another topic for perhaps another day). Either way, the repeal of the act, in my opinion, is only the first step--albeit an important one--to at least attempting to do something to fix our educational system.

And young voters? The "young" ones--ages 18-25, myself being included in that group as I'm 23--that I know for the most part do live for the weekends to party and get drunk. But for the week, so to speak, they are intelligent, rational human beings who recognize that this is a crucial election. They're paying attention. I think it's unfair to assume that "young" voters today are not aware of the power they have in voting. Quite on the contrary. I went to Hillary's rally last Monday here in Massachusetts, and there were several voting-age high school-looking students there, as well as most of the university campus, seeming genuinely interested. The conversations I overheard were actually heated--debating over Hillary's universal health care and Obama's plan for troop withdrawal, etc. I really think people recognize how crucial this election is, and they're not just going to sit back and let their vote go to waste.
  6. I wish all the young people in the country were like the ones you ran into - sadly, that is not the case. We'll just have to wait and see how the election turns out....

Either way, we always end up voting for whoever we think will do the least damage to the country...sometimes it works....sometimes it doesnt....

Yeah, that's a great way to put it--we're all far too aware of what politics is really about to have any real faith in who we elect. Sad, but true.
