  2. I'd compare this album to Zooropa. Perhaps the early shows won't have much SOE material in the set but as the tour goes on, it will increase?
  3. I'm decently sure they know what's going to be played live and have been getting a feel for it. Whenever they're back on tour, I really expect the new songs to be there. I'm not ruling a record out this year, but early next year looks increasingly likely - and I can't understand why they're so averse to going over 12 songs. 16 might be a little long but surely 13-14 is a perfectly acceptable record?

I guess one of the issues U2 have there is that their albums always tend to have either a concept or a distinct vibe, and sometimes some of those additional songs just dont fit in with that, be it lyrically, sonically or whatever.

I also think its one of the reasons why they labour over their albums a lot, is that they're either trying to find out precisely what that vibe / concept is or alternatively as is likely the case to some degree with SoE, they want the songs to fit that vibe / concept that they already established.

For me 12 is about just right, much beyond that and it seems like bloat for album, and for me personally, I'd rather any additional material that goes beyond that and doesn't fit with the theme of the record, either gets leftover for next time or as a b-side or whatever.

Not that we really get b-sides in this day and age. I miss b-sides!
  5. I agree with the comment above about u2 always going for a certain vibe. If you listen to any of the b-sides it's quite clear with the odd exception as to why there not on the album, not because of the quality but they don't fit in. They probably could release more though as extras but I think they're frightened to release something they could possibly make better.
  6. yeah, except on NLOTH, where they put in about 4 songs that didn't fit the vibe/theme... sadly (great songs as standalones, but the album was an incohesive mess).

Yeah interesting one that as I love NLOTH, but think there are two or three songs, that perhaps should have been left exclusively for Linear perhaps, which I also enjoy. I reckon Linear is Bono and Anton doing a little Wim Wenders. I love it, but know its not everyones cup of tea.

Maybe Fez, Cedars, White As Snow should have been left off, they are like the albums middle eight and kinda take the pace out of things a bit.

And I think I may have had Winter on NLOTH, and closed it with MoS (for me MoS is up there with the best of the best).

Whilst it wasn't too much of an envelope-pushing album musically (perhaps other than Fez-Being Born... Bono was definitely pushing the envelope somewhat as far as songwriting goes with writing stuff in third person in places. Maybe that's partially why it comes off as being a little disjointed in places.

We need some more guitar heavy U2, similar to Walk on and Beautiful Day
  9. sure mate, Walk On is exactly what I'd define as "guitar heavy U2", fuck Dirty Day, God Part II, Vertigo... yessss Walk On is surely what Bono meant when he said "Edge is on fire and has been bringing some punk rock from Venus"
