1. True, but it was a b-side and wasn't an album-leading hit single either.

But yeah, it's certainly a standout track within their career. I've always found it extremely weird that the song came out of the JT sessions. Who knows, maybe after hearing SOE I'll feel the same way about Best Thing.

I still say there's a difference though. Both in terms how The Best Thing sounds in comparison to what is popular (not JUST with kids, but with everyone), and its lyrical content. It's shallow (not in a bad way, just is) and isn't really pushing anything tonally. I don't think they would've written and released a song that could be described that way back in those days. At this point they're content with releasing what they consider to be great songs at their core - they don't need to be experimental or conceptually challenging. I think that's where fans take issue.

I think lyrical content is open to interpretation. Me, yes, I'll agree, they aren't the deepest lyrics, but I don't think it necessarily detracts from the song. But then, I may be the only one on the planet that thinks GOYB had some great two-line zingers in it!
  3. One thing I'm not understanding from a lot the chat about the best thing is the comparison to song For Someone. I'd put them both in completely different categories both in quality and just as types of tune. Song For Someone is a far more passionate song for me ans even musically a lot better. That's not me bashing Best Thing it's just I think song For Someone is an excellent song.

  4. Speaking of which, and going back to my point, GOYB is one of the songs that reminds me more of Pop/Discothèque... those songs had a terrible timing or something like that, considered trash when they came out, but as time went by, many U2 fans started appreciating Discothèque, and I think same should happen to GOYB... it's a great song once you're a few years away removed from when it was the lead single of a weird album.

So you're saying the future needs a big kiss? LOL

I used SFS just to mention a song that -imho- is really simple that went under the radar (and even got some hate) but that it perfectly could've been a huge hit if they had written it / released it a couple of decades ago... which helps to my point that I feel we're usually unfair to new material because nostalgia makes our hindsight a bit blurry... and that affects the way we judge songs like Best Thing.
  7. Recently, after listening a bit of music outside of U2, I listened to GOYB again, and it's a lot better than I remembered it... the structure of the song, the Edge's sound, the song as a whole.

Everybody plays dumb/fun songs all the time and they're great, but whenever U2 flirts with something a bit silly, we all get like "woah! you can't do that!"

Yeah I guess it's a fair way of making the point and I wasn't being critical of that point itself just on the defensive of SFS maybe because of some of the hate it gets that you mentioned. I agree with you it definitely could have been a huge hit and perhaps we are a bit unfair on mew material. I certainly didn't give Best Thing a chance on first couple of listens but it's grew on me to become what I have settled on as a decent song now, however id also have to say The Best Thing isn't better than my least favourites on Achtung Baby and TJT and that's me being very fair and balanced I feel, whereas Song For Someone could make it on they albums based on quality alone, admittedly not as one of the best songs on them.

  9. well, that's hardly a knock on TBT... surely you could change TBT with more than half of their catalogue (and even more than half of their lead singles), and that statement would still hold truth.

Yeah it would still hold truth to be fair but I'm just making the case that partly u2's music from the past can make us more critical of there new stuff but also sometimes there is a clear difference in quality. Maybe a better idea of where I rate it is I only consider 1 song on SOI weaker and 2 on a par so it would be one of the weakest on SOI in my mind also.
  11. I keep trying but the mix still ruins it. There’s still a nice song in there.
