1. I feel like this guy has hated everything U2 had done since I joined the forum in 2009!
  2. Who's gonna be the first to post a pic of their new album CD??

Achtung Baby - life takes a whole new direction. Adulthood. Boy grows up. Ready for the laughing gas...
Pop - still a child, but someone tells me no
    ATYCLB - I'm a man, I'm not a child

SOI/SOE - full circle, in a way... he stops to think, he starts to cry... oh why?

    This is perfect.
I'm on a similar trajectory, just approx two years younger. And couldn't have put it so eloquently.

See, this argument makes no sense to me though, especially since part of what's made SoI and SoE special is that they have so many callbacks to things only U2 fans would know and that they've sort of found out over the course of years of loving the band. Part of the reason we appreciate them is because Bono has never written such personal lyrics. If this was someone's first album, we wouldn't really give a shit.

The first question people always ask in criticism is "how does it compare to the one (or many) that came before?" - and there's a reason for it. Why would we critique SoE as if it was someone else's first album when it very obviously couldn't be someone else's first album?

I also disagree anyway. If I didn't know the artist who wrote this album and someone gave it to me and said "review this", I would certainly give it well over a 2/5. It's diverse, it's fun, it's sad, it's deep, it's politically relevant, it has a beginning and an end, up-tempo songs and down-tempo songs, has great riffs for a rock band, catchy hooks, etc.

And I have to agree with Kris, dude. I see you hating on U2 more than digging them. We've definitely agreed on stuff before, but he's not wrong lol. So I'll ask the question I asked earlier in the thread: would you be satisfied with anything U2 would or could put out these days?

(this isn't an angry post so I hope it doesn't read like it, just trying to have an honest conversation)

  6. Another thing I love about this album is generally most fans like most songs but a lot of us have different favourites. I know that’s always the case to some extent but I feel like the diversity of this album is really working in there favour.

I also think this album appeals like no other U2 album before to a "younger crowd" Sure you had VERTIGO and Elevation but AS,YTBTAM,are better pop songs..in my view!
This album has poppy sounds and nearly cringeworthy chours lyrics but's it's fun and catchy as is the point, that's the young crowd taken care of. Then you go down the album and the "oldskool" fan gets taken of. This album has a Mix of diversity a'bit of chocolate for everybody kind of deal. Those who don't like it, fair enough but to hate on it is bizare to me, i mean how many albums have they made.....what do you expect this far down the road. If this album was another artist's first i would be SHOCKED at how great it is. The Fact it's U2 proves there's still water in the kettle waiting to boil explode and hit you in the face.
  9. NME review is absolutely ridiculous!!! Everyone has there opinion but dame they r way off. Best album in like 20 yrs....for heaven sake.

Yeah as much as Best Thing and American soul are my least favourite on the album they’re not bad and do the job as you say of appealing to the younger generation. I don’t feel the need to skip them now either which I was guilty of doing after my first run through. I was just really getting into the others but when you play it in its entirety it works. I also agree this album has more than proved u2 have still got what it takes to release great music . I’m in a position now where I can be honest and say following the songs we heard pre album I wasn’t worried about a bad album but a relatively average album however they’ve completely proved me wrong and I couldn’t be any happier about it.

For what is worth, as a kid I used to say the same about Picasso's painting.

But seriously, who else is writing Little Things?

Forget it, I won't bring big guns...
...who is making something like The Best Thing About Me, and at the same time Love Is All We Have Left, and Lights of Home, and Red Flag Day in the same album?
Who has a Love is Bigger, or its little brother Get Out of Your Own Way?

Now, probably you don't like those songs, which is very valid, but who else is doing what they do with the same quality?
