We're so sorry for tonight's cancellation. Bono was in great form and great voice prior to the show and we were all looking forward to the second night in Berlin, but after a few songs, he suffered a complete loss of voice.

We don't know what has happened and we're taking medical advice.

As always, we appreciate our audience's understanding and all our fans' support in Berlin and those who travelled from afar. We will update you very soon.

  3. Wow, that video was more uncomfortable than God Part II Amsterdam.
  4. Plenty to think about here.

The band actually played for 23 minutes. By any standards that is not a full show : certainly in the nineties, Morrissey and GNR had contracts that stated the minimum performance time in order to be paid was 60 minutes unless certain circumstances occurred - circumstances like natural disaster, security, or irrecoverable band illness. I would hazard a guess that the band have similar clauses, and insurers will pay out as Bono was clearly unable to perform. U2 should have no problems getting insurance ; they are far more reliable than some artists!

What happens next is either / or :

    i) cancellation of the show with refunds
ii) Make up shows scheduled for midweek September 25-26ish (the Arena is free I think)
iii) Make up shows in November after Dublin

If ii) or iii) then there's normally 2 weeks to return tickets if you can't make the new date : and U2 are one of the band that sell a lot of tickets to international buyers. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a 20% return rate for the rescheduled dates.

Personally, this is where I am annoyed with the current tour operation. The band infrastructure *should* have a 'Plan B' designed that they can switch to if something like this happens. If I was running a tour I'd have a back up plan, so for example, I could announce within a few minutes of the decision that :

    - the show was over
and assuming a recovery date could be predicted :
    - new show dates
    - refund process if you can't go

If Cologne gets cancelled as well, there are at least three shows, and the three shows will almost definitely be after Dublin if rescheduled.

At the moment there are thousands of people who don't know if they are coming back to Berlin, let alone when and if it is this year or next or... never.
  5. My friend just told me this pun:

I meant what will happen with the next shows, will last night be rescheduled, how is Bono doing, etc...
  8. NYT

Dr. Jordan S. Josephson, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, said the most likely explanation for Bono’s loss of voice was laryngitis caused by a viral infection. He said that if that were the case, Bono could, after resting his voice and taking medicine, recover in 24 to 72 hours.
He said singers are no more at risk for laryngitis caused by a viral infection than the general public, and that he sees such cases regularly.
“It usually doesn’t last for very long,” Dr. Josephson said. “By Tuesday, he may be able to be back.”"
