Experience and Innocence tour

Shows: 75

  1. sorry, but to speak about narrative is bullshit unless we're talking about a musical theatre, not a rock show...
  2. Go and tell that to the band! not BS at all as that’s exactly what’s happening (whether you agree or not).

Also remember where this came out of. Bono and Edges Spider-Man project - also worth noting that some of the creative direction has come from Es Devlin and her team (Google her) - these are theatre people - not ‘rock people’.

A friend of mine works with Es Devlin and has worked with Willie Williams on various non-U2 projects over the years and he’s told me that Bono is quite knowledgable about theatre and opera and goes to a lot of stuff, including quite a lot of avant garde productions. Why? Well that stuff 5-10 years down the line often becomes part of big production shows like this!
  3. This show is one big narrative. It's much deeper than some musical theatre productions I'm sure. We've been working here with a few on trying to understand the full thing of it and its quite nice.. should be shared in the coming months/weeks..
  4. Who said that the U2 'e+i' tour was "rock" show...? (and how to define "rock" anyway?)

But, yeah, whether you like it or not, the basic concept of the "eXPERIENCE & iNNOCENCE" happens to be a narrative; in short, regaining innocence after experience. This very idea is reflected upon very personally by the lead singer at first, while later on he (sort of) translates this "personal experience" to contemporary politics.

And of all this is done without playing any song of The Joshua Tree...

Don't ask me how they do it, but they do it - or at least they did it..
  5. even narrative could be variable when you rotate songs with similar meaning (for example: Iris/Lemon, SBS/Please, etc...). So if they WANT, they CAN... But they are lazy on their old knees
  6. Yeah I agree the narrative argument only stretches so far. They can tell the same story with slight variation of songs. If you take the post intermission part i would say elevation and vertigo are actually less fitting to the theme as the band didn’t let the fame go to there head in the same way it did in the 90’s.
Bono calls it the vertigo part of the story but let’s be honest that’s just to try and tie it in to the song because when vertigo was released u2 had stopped behaving like ‘rock stars’. That section could have been zoo station and the fly or mofo, discotheque etc. I don’t put it down to laziness though I put it down to the band being in a certain comfort zone with elevation, vertigo, I will Follow, one etc. They know these songs will get a good reaction and when they are already playing so much new stuff and around half a set of stuff that isn’t exactly the well known material then they probably want to play a few also that gets the casuals onside.

Right. There are obviously some compromises. But..."compromises" too are in a way part of the narrative

O boy, I better leave now...for I got a show narrative to catch

Hope you and everyone else attending has a great time tonight. I’m working so won’t be listening in but eager to get home and hopefully hear it went well and get this tour back into full swing.

  9. I would love for this to happen. My parents go to Dubai every November and quite often to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (only an hour or so drive from Dubai). The dream would be U2 touring Abu Dhabi in November so I can latch onto my parents trip.

If this was to happen though, it would most likely be in 2019. Would U2 even want to perform there? I can't imagine them having a big fanbase over there and most the shows (or even show) will be full of princes and royalty. You then also have the political side of it all and how they treat Women in Abu Dhabi/ Dubai. Can't exactly see "Woman of the world take over" going down too well.

Looking at Gnr,Depeche mode and Roger Waters recent tours they played nearly every corner of the planet all similar ages and even older than the members of U2 you'd wonder why particularly on the last 3 tours they've scaled the amount of countries they visit I mean 4 legs in the US since 2015 is absolutely crazy when other parts of the world were ignored they struggled to shift tickets in the US this year particularly on 2nd nights as they've overplayed that market the desire to see them a year after the JT tour understandably has waned.if Paul McGuinness was still in charge this would never have happened .

The same Paul McGuinness that agreed to the rattle and hum movie that over saturated every body. The same manager that let the popmart tour go ahead despite them not being ready. Not knocking him at all, but I’m pretty sure it still would have gone ahead
