Exactly. Granted, their is no real melody, and the lyrics are vague. But the emotion behind it makes it one of their best.
I always thought the song had a great melody, the way it builds and builds, that repetitive riff is just one of Edge's best, pulls your heart out. Same goes for Larry's drumming when it really explodes, that brings the physicality out of it, and when Bono starts his "no, no!" bit that just brings the tears. All of this is carried by Edge's melody. The lyrics are a nice piece of work, I think, as someone who writes, in particular poetry. BUT the emotion of the song is what always gets me, but all of these factors go into the over all feel of it. one of U2's best numbers, wish I could have seen them close a show with it.
on the other hand, am I the only fan who really has never thought himself, "wow this song really isn't that good"? that thought has never crossed my mind when it comes to U2, I have never not liked a song, in fact I can get into every one of their songs, I fucking love the band, not trying to go into a "who's a bigger fan" but are there any out there who feel like me and are just, for lack of a better word, obsessed? haha
I'm not trying to say that I listen to them all the time, I don't, but idk I guess it just strikes me as somewhat odd hearing "fans" kill some of these songs haha. but I understand that fans have the absolute right to criticize since we probably own these songs more than the band does, in a weird way. I'm also not a blind follower of U2 but I think in terms of their songs, they really are the best at what they do as a band. guess that's it for now haha
