1. I guess for me it's just weird that U2 is putting a CD out (only), because it's really not a widely-used format anymore. It'd be like them putting out a new concert video, but on DVD only (instead of blu-ray or HD download).

I have to imagine everyone will get a download code with it, but still - if they're going to release it on a physical format, at least release it on one that's currently in vogue.

Not only that, but what about for the sake of consistency? The last live U2 sub gift was on vinyl, and all of the recent smaller releases have been RSD vinyls.

Yes, this is a hill I'm dying on.
  2. CD's are cheaper to produce than vinyl?

Especially for a big release like this. Big as in the number of tracks.

the funny thing is, when cd's were first coming out (i'm dating myself, lol) and i was getting ready to move to another state, i sold all my vinyl and replaced it all with the "compact"... now, i'm trying to replace all that vinyl, and it's costing me 3-4 times what I paid for the records brand new, in most cases. crazy...

I do opt for the convenience route more often than not now. I think my ears just aren’t trained enough to hear much of a difference between the formats so I just play it in the way that’s easiest. I still like to have a physical item though. I would probably say vinyl is the more impressive physical item than cd but the fact that it doesn’t really act as a back up for the digital tracks like the cd can is an issue for me. If I came into loads of money I’d probably have a u2 vinyl collection as well just to have the best of all worlds lol.

Yes exactly. Convenience for me too.

Shame U2 hasn't got their entire discography on Spotify.
  5. FLAC-HD downloads for the win!
  6. Yeah, good point.

But I mean...............U2 doesn't need to go the cheap route, AT ALL - and if that's really the reason (probably), it's kind of a shit one. They have more money than they know what to do with, and spending a tiny bit of that pile of moolah to give us nicer sub gifts would go a long way. Let's not also forget that we pay about $50 a year, which is more than the cost of a new album on vinyl. What else is that money going towards? I guess I'm happy with the music but not impressed with the presentation, and I think I'll "vote with my wallet" and not resubscribe for that reason.
  7. LiveNation wants to go the "cheap route". They want to make as much money as they can - like any business would. This seems like quite a popular gift, so putting it on CD which is much cheaper than vinyl makes perfect sense.

From a business perspective, yeah - but from my perspective, it's bunk. And while I'm sure Live Nation does decide these things, and not U2, it's the kind of thing that makes me cringe whenever U2 say "we care deeply about our fans". Yes this is just some material gift for subscribers, it doesn't mean a whole lot, but it's their official fan club, you know? They can do a little better....

In a perfect world U2 would open their complete live recording catalog to their fanclub members, in both audio and video - THAT should be the reward for being a fanclub member. Why the hell haven't they done this yet? It's not like they don't make enough money off of us when they tour lol, but I'm sure the counter argument to this will be "so they can sell "official" releases" instead of giving them away", but they probably don't make a whole lot when they release a live DVD anymore anyway.
  9. "Complete live recording catalog"

When the shows are basically the same throughout the tour with very few changes from show to show? They just release one show that covers the whole thing.

I mean, you could use this same argument to anyone who's interested in what U2start has to offer in terms of bootlegs lol. At least they'd ALL be really great quality (we can assume, anyway).

I'd be more interested in the video stuff they have in the vault, though. U2 is throwing money away every time I watch something like the ZooTV Stockholm show on YouTube.
  11. I don’t think that’s reasonable to ask them to open up every show in audio and video to fanclub members. The amount of money that would cost to give us the shows in good audio and video quality would far outweigh what we pay. Someone needs to be paid to mix these things and with videos it would take a lot of time, effort and ultimately money. I really don’t mind paying the subscription fee in a year we get a live release although really it is a bit overpriced for a 2cd set when the site offers very little else. I guess if they wanted to achieve value for money they could give us a cd set as well as a dvd of a show different from the commercial release show which they always give us. Maybe they could offer every show for purchase in audio but with a subscription you get a choice of 2 shows, that would be a bit more value for money too.
  12. I'll probably renew when they start to ship the physical gift or when I've used the pre sale code for the alleged 2019 tour. Looking forward to hearing these.
