Health care systems expect and prepare for the flu every year. And they prepare to have the capacity to deal with it. Now, this has a much higher rate of hospital admission and mortality for the elderly and vulnerable and hospitals in Italy are overwhelmed and struggling to cope.

    And there is no vaccine.

At least that's how I see it.
There are all kinds of different numbers. I usually read, mostly that the common flu has a death rate 0,1% and the coronavirus around 3,5%.

But when I take the data and do the maths, I get very different results.

There is this useful site with actual data from all countries:
    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

There we can see, that there is a very high death rate in Italy - 47.000 positive cases, 4.000 deaths - 8,5%

Then there is quite a high death rate in Spain (5,3%) and France (3,5%) and some other countries.

And then there are a lot of European countries, where the numbers are dramatically lower. For instance - Germany 0,35%, Austria 0,28%, Norway 0,34%, Sweden 1,1%, Czech Republic 0%, Switzerland 0,93%, Finland 0,19%... There are quite a lot of cases in all those countries already, so we can't say that we don't have enough of data.

The thought, that those countries migh have better health care system doesn't really work, (I think) as I explained before.

Very strange is the high rate in Italy of course, but in that article I posted before they say that even in the case of common flu "Italy showed a higher influenza attributable excess mortality compared to other European countries. especially in the elderly."
Again - according to that article 25.000 people died because of flu in Italy just in the season 2016-17

If I look at the numbers above, into the death rate are calculated all people who had the coronavirus when they died. But it is known that vast majority of them had other serious health problems. Is it proven that it was really the coronavirus that killed them and nothing else? They had the coronavirus when they died... but did it necessarily kill all of them?

I don't want to make any conclusions, but I think it is something to think about.
  2. There are way more positive cases then we know, the mortality rate is way too high currently.
  3. "there is quite a high death rate"
True, death rates are inflated because those countries aren't testing everyone but only severe cases.

"They had the coronavirus when they died... but did it necessarily kill all of them?"
HIV doesn't kill you, opportunistic infections do. I wouldn't say this virus is harmless though.

The virus hasn't been in humans for years or decades. It is a new coronavirus that no population has immunity. Unlike the flu, where there is a level of immunity in the population and there is a vaccine every year.

The virus causes the disease, COVID-19, which has defined symptoms and long progression of the disease leads to severe pneumonia, sepsis and death. There is no specified anti-viral treatment and people with pre-existing conditions and the elderly have weaker immune systems to combat the virus from progressing to that stage. And there is no vaccine, so the best way to prevent getting it is to practice social distance, wash your hands, etc.
  5. I’m just going to leave this right here. Love me or hate me but I am called to bring good news.

    2 chronicles 7:14
  6. Pleased I dont live or work in London or Birminghsm or somewhere that size, fairly easy to keep safe social distancing round here. The panic buying is driving me nuts, does seem unnecessary to me.

Yes same in my part of the Uk.
Hoarding is totally unnecessary & shows the worst in people in this country.
Shameful some of the behaviour on show.
Some positive neighbourhood work going on though.
    Stay safe folks
  8. Terrible news from Italy (nearly 800 dead people today), Spain is also in high slope.
  9. Every department of every hospital is dedicated to the Corona infected
In my town too.there’s no more surgery or pediatric or else
They are working very hard and they don’t have no more work shifts
You can do something even supporting Emergency or Medecins sans Frontieres
I hope everything will turn out fine but I don’t see that it could end in April as they supposed
Schools, personally,I don’t think they will ever open again
Today is my son’s birthday and we managed to make a homecake but no pijama party as he wanted....his class sang happy birthday by the pc this afternoon
Me,as a gardener, used to be out the whole day, I feel a bit “tied”
Nothing to do with who’s really suffering,so we are trying to tell our children that they lucky to have each other all together,a large house and food and health
    I “pray” for a resolution
    Stay Home
