    I was really disappointed when I saw that they were no longer opening "Streets" with the red screen. They've been doing that since Joshua Tree and I always looked forward to seeing how they would reinterpret it each tour since.


    I liked the flags; it looked nice. But i missed the red screen and the big spotlights in the opening. Can't they combinate those three things?
  2. hi, please more rock and roll for the next tour, I appreciate Bono's jobfor Africa and all the things he does, but, more music, five minutes of speech, one song missing,
    all the things are in the songs!
  3. I really hope they stick to what is true to themselves!!! the real true essence of U2!!
    and I'm sorry for you all, but that involves politics!!!
    If they've done something through out their career is put statements and annoying issues on the table for discussion....
    so I'm totally OK with the whole politics and speeches issues in the gigs...
    I believe thats the best way to get the msg as much spread as possible....

    ok but why do they need to spread the message...we are all adults who watch the news and are able to form opinions ourselves. Fine that songs are political but no need to force it on us.

    Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but when we watch the "news," we're watching what they want us to see, not necessarily everything that's going and making news on in the world.. For years, genocide was going on all over the world and a lot of people (myself included) didn't know it was going on. (In America especially.) Say what you will about celebs finding a cause and being a mouthpiece for it, but at least they're getting people to sit up and take notice.

    It would enable them to avoid the inevitable Sunday Bloody Sunday, BTBS, LAPOE, One, Streets medly.......instead why not replace it with a Discotheque, Mofo, real thing, Ultra violet, Zooropa medly???

    Im not saying dont play Streets...but just play it without the flags in the back ground and play it with the white flashing lights like in Zoo TV!!

    What do you guys reckon?? Do you reckon they should abandon flags,speeches and political songs and replace it with up beat tunes??

    I'd probably say something that would end up along the lines of what Jeremy said above...

    I wouldn't mind either way, although I really can't see that medley of which you speak going on lol! Those songs in altered/stripped down form on different occasions, yes, but not altogether as a staple part of the main set throughout the tour lol!

    My thinking is that I go along with a lot of the political activism that Bono heads; I mean, ok, I'm not sure what I ultimately think (over 3 years on!...) about the pro-Africa stuff - yes it's good that he wanted everyone to be made aware BUT there's that bit nagging me over the whole "give us your money" thing...I'll probably have more of an understanding when someone can clarify with regard to the financial donations Bono has made/does make before I can decide whether he's putting his own money where his mouth is...

    But my main thing is that he's always tried to use his celebrity status to make people aware of the stuff that goes on but doesn't get reported - ZooTV and the Sarajevo linkups being one such example...

    PS - I liked the flags!

    Can you elaborate a bit? I might be incredibly ignorant, but I can't think of a time when he's asked for money on the stage. It's always been "We're not looking for your money, we're looking for your voice."
  9. Yes to be fair he has never asked for money...the main problem for charities is personnel....not money.

    Just also wanted to say all excellent points have been made on this post! and I for one have found it really interesting hearing other peoples views etc!!!

    Sorry, I should clarify (I now realise that came across wrongly ) - I meant stuff like Live8 etc., I know that's not his own show but I mean, that whole campaign was looking for the general public to donate money/charitable stuff to Africa, I wondered whether Bono himself did, plus all the rest of those involved? That's not meant to sound cynical, that's a genuine question - did they or didn't they?

    No worries, Harry. I think (and this is personal opinion here) that Live8 is a little different because it was a worldwide show, chosen to coincide with the G8 meeting at the same time and to raise awareness that something needs to be done to make poverty history. I could be wrong, but I don't think the emphasis of Live 8 (or the One Campaign, for that matter) is getting individuals to make cash donations, but rather to pressure leaders and governments to make policy changes, forgive third world debt, etc. These types of changes at the higher level are ultimately what Bono and other activists are trying to get, not necessarily a $100 donation from some kid like me.
  12. Guys at the end of the day there should be more people like Bono. Those special celebrities willing and able to speak out about what is unacceptably wrong in the world. If every celebrity followed suit during their spare time instead of crashing into trees when they were drunk or getting arrested for drug possession or ochestrating their own papparrazi entourage the world would be a lot more socially conscience and informative. As Bono asserts, celebrity is currency and he's using for greater good, not to his own advantage. It's part of who he is and what U2 is so let's respect his wishes. It's not as if this has been an overnight phenomenon.
