Don't include me with the rest of them Dan - compared to people like Sam, Jeff etc. my knowledge is primitive and neanderthal lol...I can cope with different effects e.g. gain, compression, delay, reverb etc. but once they start throwing technical stuff around like Korgs and Turboscreamers, I need to sit down with a cup of coffee and mull over things lol...

I don't talk the walk, I just walk it lol.

I quite enjoyed that comparison. Nice way to put it! Basically he meant, if you've got a shit sound/amp tone to begin with no amount of effects are really going to change that. So start with getting a great tone out of your amp, and any effects should be 'the icing on the cake' (seeing as we're on the subject of food).

I'd love a tubescreamer... or a crowther hot cake, or a rangemaster... or just a shit load of money to blow on needless gear!

Excessive amounts of cash would go down very well...but I mean, for me I'd put the guitar over the kit to make it sound mad with regard to a priority. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have the amount of crap that Edge does, and the time he has to piss about with it! But I'd rather have one of his Gibson LPs...

I've just got a simple Zoom effects pedal which has done the trick for me since I got it (other than recently have the potential to give a big fuzzy sound if it wakes up on the wrong side of the bed and I switch on an effect with either reverb and/or delay), and I've got some pretty sexy tones on it which come close to Edge's stuff for a lot of songs. Couple that with my YAMAHA amp that my brother gave me once he'd got a big Marshall beast (he'd got it with his Yamaha strat. he got when he first started out, just like the Ridgewood amp I'd been using 'cause I got it with my starter kit thing...) and it ain't too bad.

    Still want an LP lol...

Yeah, you've definitely got to make priorities! And also sometimes ask yourself 'Do I really need this?' I know a fair few guitar players with indeed excessive amounts of cash and ridiculous guitar rigs. And at the end of the day, that's all just to play some local pub or club. Most of them sound shit too cause their amp's are all way to big compared to the size of the venue... anyway, rant over!

I find a lot of love and hate opinions with Les Pauls. Personally, I think they're ace! Good luck to you in finding the right one - be it one of Edge's or otherwise!

Yeah I agree - I mean, knowing people who have endless amounts of pedals and amps to match their egos (bit harsh but you catch m'drift ) and they only play in random pubs and clubs? Really isn't that necessary lol...

And re. LPs, a friend of mine has an Epiphone, and I mean just playing that left me drooling, so to get a Gibson lol...let's just say I'd die happy! (if life had gone a bit differently, I'd have been the person who got Edge's cream LP custom in the Music Rising auction but alas...)

I do indeed catch your drift! But I could ramble about that subject all day haha. Well, if a Gibbo's what you really want. Take the time and save till you've got the cash, cause even if you bought say, an Epi as it was more convenient at the time, you'll no doubt still want a Gibbo (though when you've got one you'll probably want another one, but that's besides the point). I've got two now... but I know there's nothing else I really need right now other than maybe a decent acoustic guitar!

I think I've started to drift things a little off topic here, and cannot really think of an Edge guitars and effects reference to get it back on track.

So I shall just say 'The Edge' and hope things pan out okay

    Well, we should say something along the lines of;

My, Mr. Edge certainly has a lot of guitars and some of them are Gibsons, and some of them are Epiphones, and he has an extensive amount of kit with which to juice 'em up

Because good syrup on shit waffles is still shit stale freezer-burned frozen waffles.

Now good warmed yummy syrup on good homemade waffles... THAT is good eatin'.

Good tone with a good valve amp gives good tone with a rich body. Solid state? It's worse than frozen waffles.

With Edge, the Vox is his basic tone and then it's coloured from there. It's good homemade cookin' from the start. The Tubescreamer is the main added flavor... that and then some delay, other overdrives / distortion / etc... then it's like homemade waffles with good yummy heated syrup with a touch of melted butter in it PLUS strawberrys and fresh whip cream.

Make sense? Damn, anyone else hungry?

PS - Tubescreamer is great. Either the TS-9 that is modded by Analogman.com or the Ibanez 808 reissue, as those two BOTH have the older style chip. The stock TS-9 isn't as warm and yummy. Maxon makes good OD's that mimic the old 808 - and it should as Maxon originally made those for Ibanez back in the late 1970's... ALSO Visual Sounds "Route 66" is the goods! It's like having a vintage Tubescreamer AND good (read: NOT noisy crap MXR DynaComp reissue - although it can mimic a VINTAGE DynaComp; like Edge's) compressor all in one. You can use JUST the compressor, JUST the OD or both. LOVELY. I have the Route 66 and LOVE it.

MOST IMPORTANT... When testing effects... bring YOUR guitar and play through an amp that is similar to your own (or bring yours). It is the ONLY way to know if that effect will sound good with your gear.

    Rock on, fellow U2 fans!

I don't even have a guitar But by weak I mean that it doesn't make big hearvy metal/hard rock distortions...that is distortion for me, not that weak thing you get with the tube screamer...just harder edges and a little fatter sound...And transistors are not bad, they are just different from valves.

I'm not a genius, I just play one on TV?

A wise man once told me, a genius isn't someone that KNOWS everything but one that knows WHERE to find the information.

So for me, I've learned lots from the other lads on U2 Recording Yahoo Group, reading TONS of Guitar and Drum and Bass magazines, reading lots of books - webpages...

I am eagerly awaiting the new U2 album. I can't wait to see what new gear all of the band are using. HOPING that Larry FINALLY changes the color of his drum kit! Black for all the 80's and most of the 90's and white since - bar the LOVELY multi-coloured spakle kit from Popmart... I think it's time that Lardence branch out a bit... Come on LARRY - you can do it... step outside your drum colour comfort zone.

PS - And Larry... I'd LOVE to have your Popmart sparkle kit if you haven't a need for it.

PPS - Guess what Jeff had for breakfast this morning... can you say WAFFLES! I had to have some after that analogy I made.

That adage sounds like the reverse of "who is more the fool - the fool or the fool who follows him?"

(Got to love Star Wars lol...)

But with regard to your dedication to learning about Edge's sound, I think I've got a little way to go yet lol!
  12. 2 questions for Jeff:
    1. Waht other guitars do you have?
2.What year is your Vox amp?

On the issue of Larrys drums, I think it would be cool if he got a custom emblem like Stewart Copeland, Tico Torres, and Steve Ferrone have on theres. (check out some recent Police, Bon Jovi, and Tome Petty videos)
