I like 40 and understand that it doesnt fit anywhere else in a show, but I think Vertigo and Walk On make for better closing songs. I think Vertigo (not as an encore, the only time its played) as a closer would be brilliant. Walk On was just a good vibe to end on. But watch the clip from Milan for proof that Vertigo left the audience begging for more.
The PopMart shows always had the most emotional, powerful endings whether they ended on a dismal note with Wake Up Dead Man, or on a hopeful note with One followed by a snippet. Love Is Blindness / Can't Help Falling In Love, Fast Cars, Vertigo, and the version of Kite played during the Vertigo Tour are also incredible closers, and are all welcome replacements for the overplayed "40".
Not to say that "40" is a bad song, or even show closer. Its performance in Chicago, where the band left the stage one by one, is outstanding.

The band always leave the stage one by one when they play 40, not only in Chicago. Always! Bono, Edge, Clayton and last Larry. That's the way they do.
I've always loved Love Is Blindness as a closer but due to the nature of the song it features very little fan interaction. Therefore '40' or Moment Of Surrender would get my vote. I like Kite also but it's not really a sing along song either.
Yeah, I agree there but I like a slow end to the evening. I remember Vertigo at Twickenham, 2005, and the end just seemed to be an anti-climax. Yahweh brought the mood in a little bit, then Vertigo smashed it.
On 360 tour, the encore began with Ultra Violet, which is a kind of slow burner until Edge kicks in, followed up by With Or Without You, which is a crowd favourite (like it or not) a lot of fans were singing along at the shows I went to. Finally Moment of Surrender kicked in which features a chance for fans to sing along. I think the slower songs kind of pull away from an amazing experience and really focus attention onto the band just before they leave. I remember after Wembley, 2009, heading down the stairs (from the heavens) a number of fans further up singing "Oh, oh,oh ohhhh oh oh" from Moment of Surrender and it was echoing down the stairways.
I prefer slow ending too .
Vertigo is a great sing along song, but i prefer others to close the show.
I agree with you.
I like : All i want is yyoooooouuuuuuuuuuuuu
or I m a maaaaaaaaaaaaan i m not a chiiiillllllllllllllddddddddddd from Kite
