    True. I remember though back in the day, in my youth (lol) I would see U2 up to 10 times a tour.

    ZooTV was the exact same gig at my 10 shows. Same with my 10 JT gigs in '87. Thats a shame IMO.

    I loved all my shows, no question. But it must get so boring for them.

    This show is the second out of three shows at Jones Beach.The previous night was pretty average and unremarkable, and the local finale the following night was absolutely stupendous. I was at all 3 shows, the weather for N1 was brutal.Rain, and cold out. This middle child of the New York residency is a very solid performance. It's definitely better than the first night, and serves as a warm up for the following show in which they pulled out all the stops. In this bootleg, the performances by all band members are solid and no-nonsense, with especially fine renditions of the rockers "Last Exit" and "Spin the Black Circle." The band is especially strong in this evening's extended jams, really getting a groove going in the extended takes on "Daughter," "I Got Shit," and "Rearviewmirror." The set list is above average, as compared to the overall series, there are a few rarities like "Dissident" and "Rival," both of which are played energetically tonight. As is Of The Girl and NAIS, which has been, and will always be monsters live.

    This boot is a prime example of a strong show. But it is slightly overshadowed by the gig the following evening, which is one of the BEST OF 2000.

    So we're reviewing shows again, are we?

    All-State Arena
    Rosemont (i.e., Chicago), IL
    October 9, 2000

    I should start by saying that I was a bit concerned when I started listening to this one as there was already so much hype about this Chicago show - it has both the official “Ape-Man” and unofficial “Ed-Man” designations! I just didn’t want my expectations to exceed the experience itself.

    Any show that starts off with “Release” is a show that has started off on the right foot. I love this song. I will add, however, that this version seemed a bit...slower...more subdued than others I’ve been listening to. I’m not too sure if it was a 2000 thing or if I have been listening to too many versions from more recent performances. In any case, this song is a winner no matter what the tempo.

    The nice thing about review these concerts is that I tend to focus a little more of the performance of each song. “Corduroy” has always a favourite of mine (since the release of Vitalogy in 1994 – “Release” is a newer favourite) but because they play it so often, I have to admit I don’t pay as much attention to it as I should when I listen to the bootlegs. Anyway, it is arguably the best #2 song for a PJ show, although arguments can be made for “Go” and “Animal.” The contrast between “Corduroy” and any “warm up” opening song (especially “Release”) is fantastic.

    The bust out one of the heaviest songs from the then-new Binaural album, “Grievance.” I really like the 2000 versions of this song and other up-tempo songs from that album – and it beats the pants of songs like “Comatose,” which I had the “privilege” of listening to in excess while reviewing those 2006 bootlegs.

    After addressing the crowd (and mentioning the frigid concert from the previous evening) they bust into “God’s Dice.” Admittedly, it’s one of my lesser favourites from Binaural but I’d take it nowadays over a song like “Unemployable” (another track that I heard ad nausea during my 2006 tour experience.)

    After showing some confidence in their new album, the previously mentioned classic, “Animal” is set loose and it is performed to perfection. The band is one tonight.

    A nice version of “Red Mosquito” is played next. They are doing a good job so far of playing songs from a variety of albums – I suppose they only had six to choose from at this time.

    I still think “Nothing as it Seems” is the best song off Binaural after all these years. It was the first single from the album and therefore the first song I heard from it. In fact, I only knew it and “Light Years” (its other single) from Binaural until probably 2006! It’s one of their darkest songs – such a heavy mood to it. It’s also a great divergence from what they had been doing earlier in their career. I wish they’d attempt to write more songs like it. Oh, and a great performance of it this night. I believe EV messed it up (and admitted the blame) two shows earlier in Detroit.

    Ah....a song from Yield now and, arguable, the best (and definitely the most popular) one, “Given to Fly.” It really had a great, raw energy back in 2000 as it was still relatively new. When EV hits those notes and wails like he can, the song is phenomenal. I thought he did a great job of this on this particular evening.

    The playing of Yield continues and it’s its other single, “Wishlist.” I much prefer these 2000 versions that the more recent ones. I love the “I wish I was the radio song...” ending that they played in 1998 and 2000 instead of the drawn out endings they do now. “I wish I was the president....run the country like a rock n roll band” comes off as quite cheesy to me. The mood is kept rather calm and cool with the always (well, usually, anyway)great “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town.” These two songs go quite well together.

    Things pick up a bit with “In Hiding,” which is a nice addition to the setlist. This is another song I didn’t really appreciate until a few years ago. In fact, I recall being somewhat disappointed that they didn’t it all during the 2011 Canadian tour. Once again, those Yield songs sound really good in the 2000 bootlegs.

    Now things get really revved up as the band breaks into (one of) their biggest(s), “Even Flow.” This is a stellar version. I’ve read on the 10c forums that it is a bathroom break song for some fans – they’ve heard it so many times that they are bored of it. That’s a shame if you ask me. Like “Corduroy,” I will admit that I tend to tune it out a bit since I’ve hear it MANY times. However, when I’m paying close attention to a bootleg, I really appreciate what this song is made of – and I was also a bit disappointed/surprised I didn’t get to hear it during Toronto 1 back in 2011.

    A touching version of “Light Years” is played next and is dedicated to a woman named “Grace” – any idea who this is? Even though the topic of this song is a sad one (but nowhere near as sad/depressing as their “The End”) it is still an enjoyable tune to listen to.

    “MFC” comes next - too bad no “Untitled” intro as that is “half the song” for me. Fortunately, I’ve always liked the studio version of this song so once it gets going I don’t seem to miss the intro.

    What comes next is always great: The hard-hitting “Lukin” which then goes straight into an outstanding version of “Not For You” – classic Pearl Jam. Sure I like the “Modern Girl” outro that they’ve often included with the song since 2006 (I believe that Slater-Kinney song wasn’t written/released until 2003) so but Mike’s (?) picking at the end really defines the song for 2000.

    One great Vitalogy tune lead to another two: A very good version of “Better Man” follows immediately after “Not For You” ends (too bad no “Save It For Later” tag on this night) and two songs later comes the always soulful “Nothingman.” Yes, they did play “Leather Man” between the two previously mentioned songs (part of that “Man” trilogy) but I will come clean here and state that I’ve never been much of a fan of that song. Yes, it should have been on Lost Dogs but it really isn’t nearly as good as the majority of any album tracks from the band’s first decade.

    You’d think the main set would be done by now but nope, they give the crowd a rather intense version of “Do the Evolution” (Yield is getting quite of bit of play tonight – it’s the fifth song performed from that album!) and “Insignificance” – definitely the best upbeat song from Binaural. These two work well at this point in the set.

    And now....”Black”- the most frequently listed “favourite song” of hardcore PJ fans. It’s this band’s “Where the Streets Have No Name.” This particular rendition is beautiful from start to finish – and what a finish! - even without the usually obligatory “We Belong Together” tag.

    EV announces to the crowd their main set is a little longer than the usual 17 songs – 22 songs by his - and mine. Anyway, it’s time to play one more and they choose, in my mind, the band’s most underrated song, “Parting Ways.” This song is fantastic. It’s such a shame that songs like this one (and “Can’t Keep”) are omitted from pretty much every PJ set but they still choose to play junk like “Comatose” and “Unemployable” – yeah, it’s the second time I’ve dissed these two songs in this review but the even worse “Ole” and “Got Some” are still too “new” to blame the band for still playing them!

    Anyway, “Parting Ways” closes the set very nicely.

    Now the first encore begins a song that I’ve never been a huge fan of, “Sleight of Hand.” However, it’s positioning so close to “Parting Ways” works quite well. They have a similar feel so I didn’t mind this version at all. It’s when they play it after an upbeat number (which they often did) makes it a bit of a buzz killer for me.

    Even though I was able to stay positive for the previous song, “Soldier of Love” has never really done it for me and still didn’t this go around. Fortunately, “Crazy Mary” (not a PJ song but still a PJ song) saves the day. I really like these 2000 versions. Sorry, Boom, I know you’ve played a mean B3 on this song since 2003 but I prefer these versions where the guitar is the main background instrument.

    Seeing that they weren’t playing “Alive” during most of the North American legs of this tour (and I can understand why they dropped it from their sets at that time), you still have to expect something heavy from Ten – and why not go for the crowd-pleasing “Jeremy.” Sure songs like “Once” and “Porch” are great but “Jeremy” would make all in attendance happy. And for the record, it was a great version – EV even sang (as opposed to moaned – I’m not a fan of this) the first verse.

    At this point, I started to notice that Vs. had been neglected since the first half of the main set. Fortunately, a full on version of “RVM” will take care of that void quite nicely – and they get it done in under eight minutes which isn’t that bad.

    To begin the second encore, EV goes on a Ralph Nadar plug. I don’t have really have too much to say about political issues that occurred almost 13 year ago, so I won’t say anything at all. Anyway, “Soon Forget” follows – EV pokes fun at rich people before and during the song (when he screws it up) which is somewhat humorous on a few levels.

    “Baba O’Riley” is a classic - originally by The Who and (to me) just as much as a cover by PJ. I hope one day I hear them perform it. This song epitomizes rock music.

    Obviously, FIVE STARS. One doesn’t dare to go against an Ape-Man (or an “Ed-Man”) rating.

    I thought Ronnie was supposed to review a show ?

    In a few days I will do a proper review of East Troy..10.08.00....

  6. If there is a time that this thread should NOT be dead, it's probably now. They're releasing the three SA bootlegs...a fall tour announcement is looming...thay seem to be at the same/similar point in the recording process as U2....I'm still trying to figure out a way to get to the London show...I've made more compilations that I need to post...

    Im going to review East Troy soon...and a few others from 2000..I think we should just review random shows from 2000 for now whenever..hear and there.......maybe just for June ?

  8. I suppose I can re-listen to a few shows from 2000. It's a great tour (aside from the lack of "Alive" during the NA legs of the tour).

    I/we should listen to the two Seattle shows again (if only so I can hear "Alive" - but maybe skip the post-song speech) and even that Boise show you're always going on about.

    After that....hmmmmm...maybe 2008?
