1. Sorry but I thought this was really funny

My concern is this enthusiasm and appreciation of the album will fade...

Can somebody please help remind me, but wasn't enthusiasm for HTDAAB also as high as it currently is for SOE? I recall it being universally loved...

I know I remember loving it from the outset (more than ATYCLB) but that album hasn't held up for me and I rarely re-visit it as much as other U2 albums.
I wasn't here for the release of HTDAAB, but I remember the feelings of NLOTH being pretty similar to what they are now (to that album). Some loved it, some hated it, many thought it was okay. It certainly wasn't a resounding praise like this album is getting.

I also still think Bomb is a pretty fantastic album...

I loved Bomb; it is a very strong album, with strong singles. No line has some great tunes, but it immediately felt a little too sad at times, and single-less.

It is indeed very early days to judge SOE. There's no real duds in there, though; and quite a few of the songs really feel outstanding to me. Time will tell.

Apart from Bowie and possibly the Stontes, I'm not aware of many other guitar acts that have produced work of this level in their mid to late 50's.

This resounding praise WILL deflate. I remember the forums being overwhelmed by SOI when it first came out, but that was purely because it was surprise to everybody, then some people started saying how weak some songs were, which arrived when the tour started. Once this leg starts in May, we'll be a month in and people's opinions of the album will dip. Personally, I think SOE is significantly worse than SOI. It lacks structure, it doesn't flow as well, and as what is meant to be a companion to SOI or a continuation, I feel like I've waited years for something that doesn't represent a cohesive, great body of work, ergo it is a disappointment to me. It's too early to arrive at a definitive opinion for anybody, whether you think it's great or okay or even crap, because I could love this album a year or two down the line. SOI got better and better for me, but I don't remember saying that any song (maybe bar Volcano) was at all weak. SOE feels a bit limp and scattered, something that was thrown together haphazardly.
  5. I’m down to three standout songs already. From thirteen. I’ll not be doing another complete run though for a while so that I can still approach it with some sense of newness.

Fair point about SoI, and you're certainly correct. We're in the honeymoon phase.

    Wow.

See, I'm still enjoying all of it as a complete work, and I think each song compliments each other still. Who's to say if that'll fade, but for now I'm still seeing it all as one big work.

    Indeed!
  9. I like SOI more now than when it came out. I expect SOE to stick because it’s reached such a high point in my estimations already I can’t see it getting into the next level which is JT and AB territory but I also don’t see it fading either. I guess in terms of the general feedback the positivity could fade but I feel like I know this album quite well already and I’m very happy with it.

I don't think anything will ever get into that territory. Not even if an album came out that was somehow objectively better. There's too much built around those albums now, music aside, for ANYTHING to make its way up to that level. What I mean is for instance, part of what sets Achtung apart is that it was a massive reinvention. U2 could never have a reinvention of that magnitude again, because they're already done it.
