Heh, to quote mos people on this topic thus far, "I never said" I didn't like JT/LT era WOWY, they're my second favourite era for said song. I just prefer ZooTV. I like the R&H version a lot, but my favourite is from Paris 1992, and most 1st-3rd leg versions blow me away. Any version with the solo >> snippet arrangement gets my vote but ZooTV takes home the bacon for me. I still like the introduction of the format they've used since PopMart - I guess they're more like the album version with no solo or snippets, and I love the way it builds up into a big climax BUT there's nothing like a good solo to precede Bono singing "Yeah, we'll shine like stars..."...especially if it's from 1992

I don't get this whole business with people complaining about Streets being difficult to play etc., unless the chord changes being referred to are the backing synths/organ...the guitar part is a piece of piss to play (the hard part is nailing the tone/sound), the bass is root notes for the most part plus the odd melody here and there - I'd say the hardest part to play would be the rhythm. Bono's vocals have been a point for complaint over the years, but he always gives it everything whenever they play it. No, it doesn't have certain elements that the album version has but I don't think it loses anything as a result.

I have never heard WOWY from Paris 1992 (is it on youtube?), I was going by the Stockholm/Sydney/LA/Washington performances. So did the shine like stars snippet first appear in the ZooTv tour? I also love the solo to snippet arrangement (see eye of the fly). Okay Zoo TV WOWY is probably better than JT WOWY, but I was just going by the R&H performance, I'll download the Live at the Point Depot concert and see.

And Brian Eno is the one complaining how Streets is difficult to play.

"No, it doesn't have certain elements that the album version has but I don't think it loses anything as a result." Okay, but what does the live version have over the album version?

Also I don't think COBL live is better than the album version from what I've heard....

Don't drop BD when there are so many more obvious songs that should have been dropped ages ago. ie Bullet the Blue Sky, Pride and I Will Follow.

  2. Don't agree...COBL was way too flat during HTDAAB. I must say I prefer the studio-version.

WOWY from Paris'92 has a high awesomeness (funny word..) level..

Nah, it's not on YouTube which is a shame. However, the entire show is incredible (well, me Casper and Steve think so ) so it's worth downloading. Shine Like Stars has been around as long as WOWY but come the release of Zooropa, it started going out of fashion with the band along with the solo slot, hence why many of us feel that WOWY has gone downhill since. However, I for one am still happy to hear pretty much any version from any era, but just think that it's a complete waste to drop the solo/snippet arrangement which was such a spectacular part of the song as a live entity. However, to get a really good feel for it, you should probably get more than just a few shows from each tour

And yeah, I know Eno was one who complains about Streets live lol. What I meant was that what Streets may lose in a musical sense is made up with the kind of energy and emotion that it generates in a live situation. Every time Edge starts reeling out the arpeggios, the audience just erupts, and it's such a special thing to hear (and I'd love to be a part of it one day in the future ). I don't deny the album version is good, but I always prefer hearing live versions - try the 3rd Lovetown Dublin show, if that isn't a wall of noise I quite frankly can't admit to knowing what one is.

Re. COBL, I think it was very much hit and miss live. Sometimes, it would take off and really lift the show, but on others it just missed something, can't say what though. And re. BD, YES drop it, Vertigo versions suck compare to Elevation versions lol. I'm just a bit sick of the song; there are some performances where you think "hey, that was uber" whereas other times, it's just nondescript. Like I say, during Elevation, both BD and Elevation (song) were new and flashy, but during Vertigo they often seemed a bit tame. However, Pride and BTBS should really be used more sparingly, but IWF? No flippin' chance, a timeless live song in my eyes

    Oh so true
  5. In regards to the WOWY discussion about the post solo performances....one thing I would counter is that, the post solo performances are basically the most intimate ones....granted, I love the solo version, can't beat it.....however, the song has turned into much more of an intimate affair, especially on Vertigo and Elevation, hell you can't get more intimate than Popmart when they turned all the lights out.....so it's a more subtle version, different but not necessarily any better or worse....we'll see what the latest incarnation is

I just listened to the u2 Communication performance of WOWY, can see your point, the vocal performance was fantastic, pity it didn't have the solo and 'shine like starts' verse.

From this performance it seems Bono's voice has gained more angst with age, which works well for WOWY.

I've never head a post Zoo-TV WOWY I've really loved.
  8. who thinks magnificent would work
  9. Lol 6 month plus bump! No not really? Magnificent sort of ends suddenly, unless they extend the crap out of it. I picture Magnificent towards the beginning.

Now Unknown Caller is a different story.
  10. I think that Moment of Surrender should lead into Streets on this tour. It has an amazing build to that organ which could easily fade into Street. It would be amazing.
  11. yeah moment of surrender would be good
  12. COBL still a front runner.

But if we're talking new album, Fez/Being Born could work if it doesn't open.
    Moment of Surrender might fit.

Interesting trivia, a new song hasn't led into Streets since Please during PopMart.
