Maybe not to the same extremity, but certainly something for him to slip into as far as a theme or subject matter is concerned. I thought this was a really good idea. Ok I don't expect a Macphisto character coming out, but I think it would be cool to see what he would do. Actually I think he was experimenting with a character when he was doing a lot of the promo GOYB performances, and he was wearing eye shadow. Interesting.

    Bring that creativity back Bono!!!

He spoke about Jesse, but to be honest..I'd rather see him singing well. (Which he does btw)
  2. Well, I think it's still possible for him to sing well and perform as a character, maybe even sing better. When he would put on that voice for his Macphisto character in ZooTV it sounded like his accent made songs like WOWY sound fresh and really emotional.

They rotated the songs in rehearsal and tried three different openings. They have experimented and feel that this is the best opening. A little left field and not the predictable opening that they may have had (which I assume was Boots).

Unlike the other tours they had a long time rehearsing the songs, which I think shows in strong performances from the get-go.
  4. like i said the stage is made for songs like Mofo, Zoo station, Discotheque. I think Mofo will be played on this tour!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still think it is bono's favorite song!!!!!!!!!
  5. Isnt the guy from Ultraviolet a character sort of thing? The LED-suit?
    Could be he meant that...

  6. character or not, that jacket is immense.

and I agree about the Zoo TV accents, they added to the songs imo.
  7. Just attended my 1st 360 gig at Hampden last night, had a great time and thought the concert was (mostly) great!

However, the encore really undermines the rest of the show IMO! I love Ultraviolet but 75% of the crowd looked clueless, then followed the most half-arsed version of WOWY ive ever heard, bollocks! MOS is a great great song, but really not great set closer. If anything i would have opened the encore with MOS then some more up tempo tracks. WOWY needs to go, hes clearly not feeling it anymore.

Unfortunately, the average U2 concert visitor does have feeling with it...

Now that the first leg is over, I've got to take my hat off to the guys for a pretty solid setlist in Europe.

A couple of songs not played in ages, a few not played in a while, one not played at all prevously.

Some variation coupled with strong performances of the new tracks, particularly No Line On The Horizon, Breathe and Unknown Caller.

I expect the setlist to evolve like Vertigo however. I don't think you can discount the unplayed new tracks just yet and I reckon some more old songs will be brought in over time.

Boy for instance has to figure somewhere. This is the first tour since ZooTV where Boy has not been represented in the setlist during the whole first leg.

What will make way? At least a few tracks, namely Unforgettable Fire and City Of Blinding Lights, won't be stayers throughout the entire tour. But then again, what the hell would I know.

My top five highlights so far are (bear in mind I have not attend a show yet so this is purely going on bootlegs):

    1. Ultraviolet
    2. No Line On The Horizon
    3. The Unforgettable Fire (particularly Glasgow where Bono sneaks in the "in a lie" bit at the end)
    4. Crazy Tonight remix
    5. The return of Stay, albeit acoustically and irregularly.

    What do others think?

I agree, but my top 5 are:

    1. Ultraviolet (good on bootlegs, but shiver-inducingly out of this world to experience live)
    2. The Unforgettable Fire
    3. Elevation
    4. Get On Your Boots
    5. City Of Blinding Lights

  11. I'd kill for that jacket.

I think the setlists are working well for people at a show. I had the same setlist at Wembley I and Sheffield and thoroughly enjoyed it both times, though I was standing at Sheffield which hightened the experience.

But as somebody said before though, the stage is crying out for Mofo, The Fly, Zoo Station and to be honest as a bootleg listener, the shows are crying out for them too. I'm not too bothered about other bootlegs atm because of the lack of difference.

The shows could be made infinitely better and the tour could go down as one of U2's best if they just went all out. Question is, could Bono handle the energy required to make these perfromances stand out. He has plenty of time to rest during Stuck, WOWY, ISHFWILF at the moment. Mofo etc would require him to get moving and stuff.

    EDIT:

    Top 5 highlights;
    1. Return of Ultraviolet
    2. Sheer class of Unknown Caller
    3. Amazing light show with City Of Blinding Lights
    4. Return of The Unforgettable Fire (Need to stray away from the "Stay now! Stay now!" line though
    5. Moment of Surrender - great vocals IMO and a really good closer.

I admit I'm pretty impressed with Unknown Caller as well. Didn't know how they were going to pull it off live but it works very well. And a good spot in the set.
