There was an article in Blender that showed a different tracklist to HTDAAB. I will have to find that and post it; I have it at home.

In the same article it mentioned that Larry thought the album was too long and thought (2) tracks needed to be cut. "Mercy", probably as it was a long tune and "Fast Cars" that ended up on deluxe versions and most country's outside the U.S. anyways.

Edge said he liked the song and it'd make the best B-side ever, or something to that extent. Yet, it didn't surface on any of the HTDAAB singles.

I asked Bono about playing it, at Vertigo San Jose shows. He grinned and said, might not get to that one this tour. But I think that they realize it's a song that many like and are interested to see released.

There was talk of it being re-worked for Songs of Ascent. Time will tell if that happens or not.

Funny- cut "A Man and a Woman" and "All Because of You", replace them with those two tracks, and that album would be utterly perfect for me. Oh well.
  2. What I find really strange is that the girl who leaked the track over on Interference met Bono in person before the release of HTDAAB and he told her "Darling, watch out for Mercy, you will love it, its one of my favorites" and a few weeks later she got a pre-release copy of HTDAAB from one of her friends which had Mercy as the 12th track and which she leaked to the world.

That is a pretty crazy coincidence. Just adds to the near mythical status the song has taken on.

I don't think it's that amazing though in its current state, certainly some of the other songs on Bomb were better. It has great promise though, the first verse is brilliant, i'm sure it'll be fantastic when they finish it (If they ever release it).

I cleaned up the original WMA file with SoundSoap. It doesn't fix the uneven levels but it does take out most of the tape hiss. Am I allowed to post a link here?

For sure. The one I have now has a lot of hiss on it but it seems EQ'd and normalised compared to the original leak.

I'm expecting to see it in some kind of Unreleased And Rare set on iTunes eventually like Levitate (and that, should have been on Bomb).

The 'leaked' tracklisting for HTDAAB was something like:

    Vertigo
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
    City of Blinding Lights
    A Man And A Woman
    Yahweh
    Crumbs From Your Table
    All Because Of You
    Tough
    Miracle Drug
Full Metal Jacket / Native Son
    Love Peace Or Else

Firefly would have been part of the album until it was re-recorded as City Of Blinding Lights (the original rejected for Spiderman) and so would have Are You Gonna Wait Forever, Xanax And Wine (until re-recorded in the last three hours of the sessions to Fast Cars) as well as a cover of Neon Lights.

Other rumours going around in 2003 were the album would be called Solar or Solaris.

  5. Wasn't a big U2 fan at that point, and sure as heck hadn't discovered this place by that point, and even I remember those rumors. I sort of like the title of Bomb, no matter what some of the nay-sayers think.

You wouldn't have found the site in 2003. 2006 I think it started, and how I remember Bono staring from down the top of the page.

Solaris would have been a crap title - I mean, solar? What does that have to do with any of the songs on the album?

  7. I'm-a-downloadin' right now, I'll let you know what I thought.

I always wondered why that person who ripped it originally couldn't have done it as a WAV or FLAC file instead of a WMA file. Nothing against WMA as even lossless it provides a pretty good and balanced sound and result, but surely using a more common lossless format would have been ideal (or at all).

Anyway, enough of that - 38% through.

U2 albums go through a number of titles and ever artwork. You can get a great sense of this if you've seen "Stealing Hearts At A Travelling Show" (book) by Four5One..

Four5One is the designer of most U2 album/single/ticket/t-shirt art - ran by Steve Averill.

You learn that Pop was almost called "Discola". At one point "Godzilla". And at yet another point "Atomic". (Amongst a number of other titles. Similar name changes and art changes are shown in the book for other albums too. Highly recommended book.

Any chance you could post one or two scans? I've never seen this before either, and I'm over in the US so shipping from a private UK seller is a bit more than a hassle without a credit card.
