1. Elevation > Vertigo
But Popmart was really nice...the album was not that good, but the tour had some energy left from the Zoo Tv days...great stuff. Vertigo sounded very uninspired, until the last legs. And Elevation was great as a come back and as a smaller production.

Nope, that came from studying "God Part II"

God pt.2...of course. Don't like the song, so don't hear the lyrics that often.
  4. I think it's kind of a generation thing.
A lot of those that became fans before Achtung Baby were irritated with the new music and the new style. They feel more comfortable with the "back to the roots" style of the last two albums and tours. At least that's what a lot of longtime fans told me...
Also, those that became fans with ATYCLB or the Bomb will of course worship that era more than previous. It's always hard to judge tours that you haven't witnessed and I think it's almost impossible to comprehend what Popmart was if you haven't been to a show. Bootlegs or DVDs just don't transport the gigantomania. It's even hard to understand the whole concept when you've been very young during that time.
At the end of the day, it's all about music and if you leave aside all the hats and lemons and stuff, the live versions of the POP songs still are some of the best U2 have ever done in my book.

  5. yes I do really miss POPMART, seriously need to bring back Mofo, Discotheuqe, Last Night on Earth and Do You Fell loved to this new leg, shake it up, don't play the same type of music as well as the same songs ...
  6. PopMart was great in a tongue in cheek way and it was certainly a high point in terms of U2 merchandising!

Fact is it was miles behind Zoo TV both visually and musically and lets not forget, the 1st and 3rd legs were largely disasterous in terms of performance on attendance. Probably not surprising as North America (in the main) just didnt get it what the band were doing.

I know lots on here loved it but Ive often thought it was a generation thing. For me, Pop and PopMart - whilst very good, will always remain a 'what if' in U2 history. It looked great but could have and should have been much better

not going to happen by the looks of it...

once again seems i will have to put all my hope into the next tour (whenever that might be)

i thought after nearly 13 years the band might be ready to start playing some pop material again but it appears they need to somehow re-grow some balls first and stop clinging onto the safety net of ATYCLB.... the complete neglect of those amazing songs is criminal - hopefully one day they will realise that...
  8. I yearn for POPMART and agree with yeah: the last great tour they did!
The Claw screams for Discotheque, DYFL and Velvet Dress!
  9. It would be great some Pop tunes played live - especially Mofo but Ive never got the clamour for Discotheque to be replayed. I love the tune and it would be sentimental to play again but it was never great live. I always felt it missed something.

for me the popmart era wasn't just about the awesome show - it was also about the whole attitude of amazing musical experimentation that was going on at the time. its just such a shame the relative failure of the pop album and the tour in the US seemed to cause them to lose their bottle and play it safe for the rest of their career which just doesn't do anything for me anymore i'm afraid...

i was however totally oblivious at the time to how badly it was going for the band in america. due to the lack of instant news via the internet and the fact i got to see one of the best shows of the tour (Leeds) i thought they were on fire and riding high. it was only quite a few years later when i heard the las vegas boot and many others from that first leg and read the attendance figures for a lot of those US shows that i realised just how bad it had been for them..

to sum it up though - i will always see the ZOOtv era as the overall highlight of their career but unfortunately i just missed that by a year or so... so popmart will always be my own personal favourite U2 era as i was completely and totally obsessed with the band and what they were doing at that time and although it makes me so sad and bit angry that they left their balls in 1998 i also look back on it with very happy memories

yeah if they were going to bring back some pop material i wouldn't want discotheque... for one its far too much the obvious boring choice and secondly there's so many more amazing songs on that album. i also hated the few times they've played it since 97 and failed miserably trying to 'improve' it...

mofo will always be number one on my all time want list of U2 songs - i will NEVER forget the feeling i got when that song kicked in at Leeds in 97. i honestly thought i was going to pass out through sheer uncontrollable excitement. i'd never felt like that before and i've never come close to feeling like that since...

i'd also love them to play please again (and i'm surprised they havn't) such a powerful song lyrically and musically.

miami was awesome but i cant see them ever playing that again...

LNOE was pure power especially the outros and i think it would work brilliantly on this tour as an interchangeable song..

DYFL never got a chance to shine and could've become a live beast...

SATS worked well acoustically but could've been a live anthem if they'd spent more time working on the full band arrangement.

and velvet dress is one of the most beautiful songs of all time.. nuff said

You are right about the bottle part although Pop was the end of a 3 album experimentation which totally changed the myth of U2. Perhaps by the time the 3rd leg started, they had taken it as far as they could and as Bono points out in U2 Live - the South American leg effectively saved the band such was their attitude at the time.

I dunno if they left their balls back then as such but I think the tour experience totally shot their confidence and has left a bit of a scar on them.

The Pop era is looked upon with great fondness amongst the fans (myself included) but I doubt the band look upon it the same way.
