1. Actually it might be remastered after all, I forgot about this but someone tweeted a while back that "Achtung Baby was being remastered in the studio next door".

So Universal support staff might just be ignorant or incompetent (not unlikely if you remember the NLOTH leak fiasco)

The other thing could be that the album was digitally recorded after all, I'm not sure - it was recorded on tape but it could be digital tape. If so the rerelease would not technically be remastered but remixed or enhanced.

    @u2 makes this point too:
That's the strangest thing to me right now -- the word "remastered" doesn't appear anywhere on any of the album promotional material or the online store listings. Is it because the album itself was already recorded digitally and there's nothing to remaster? I'm not sure, but I do see that the liner notes of my Achtung Baby CD booklet say:

"Digital Editing by Stewart Whitmore / A&M Mastering Studios"

That leads me to think the original recording is already digital, so there's nothing to remaster. Then again, I'm far from an expert on recording studios/techniques/quality/etc.

So perhaps there is still hope, is there any definitive way of knowing how AB was recorded?

  2. I think that didn't have anything to do with Universal. It was a mistake by an (australian? can't remember) online shop, who put it on sale a few days before they should.
  3. Regarding the digital/analog debate, I can provide what my original (1991) vynil says about it:

    Recorded in:
Hansa Ton Studios Berlin, Dog Town Dublin, S.T.S. Dublin, Windmill Lane Studios Dublin.
Recording Facilities and Co-Ordination Berlin: Joe O'Herlihy and Dennis Sheehan.
Recording Facilities and Co-Ordination Dublin: Terry Cromer, Audio Engineering Dublin.

Mastering by: Arnie Acosta / A&M Mastering Studios L.A.
Digital Editing by: Stewart Whitmore / A+M Mastering Studios L.A. (sic.)
Quality Control by: Cheryl Engels / A&M Studios L.A. (sic.)

I think it was recorded in analog tapes and later mixed and mastered in digital format.

Moreover, there are some references in U2byU2... Edge: "Later on, we tried to order the album in Windmill, experimenting with different options before taking it to Los Angeles for it to be mastered, but we had ran out of time so I picked up all the tapes (which were all in different formats, DAT, 1/2inch tapes and 1/4inch tapes) and picked up a taxi to the airport".

    According to Wikipedia:
Universal Music Group took extreme measures to prevent the album from leaking, offering pre-release listening sessions for critics instead of sending out review copies. However, Universal Music Australia's online music store, getmusic.com.au, accidentally released the album for digital sale on 18 February 2009, almost two weeks before the scheduled release date. The complete album appeared on the website for a short time before it was removed, and the accidental sale led to the album's being leaked and shared across the Internet.[51] U2 reacted to the leak with some positivity. The Edge stated, "The one good thing about that is a lot of our fans have already given us their thumbs up. Even though it was fans getting it for free."[52]
  5. Don't ya just love us
  6. Prices for the AB Remasters are up on Sanity, all for October 28.

    Standard: $26.99

    Deluxe: $29.99

    Super-Deluxe: $179.99

    Over-Priced Über Deluxe: $599.99

Sanity is usually overpriced so there'll likely be better deals going. I'm think the Super-Deluxe will be $120 - $130 elsewhere.

JB-Hi Fi should be cheaper i'd imagine...
  8. No listings there yet. But I'm keeping an eye on it, should be up around late this month if not very early September (1st - 5th).

Still not up for paying $179. Maybe $100 or so, but not much more given I did do $120 for the overpriced piece of shit No Line box. I may not even get it in a store but I'm keeping an eye out on CDWow - this site, they do specials and stuff on new releases, seen new albums there just released a few dollars cheaper.
  9. Yeh i never shop at sanity they r a fukn rip off. Jb or muses should be the way to go.
  10. The Muses are a rip-off too on their new stuff. Good for obscure and second-hand though.
  11. the price is such a turn off i'd pay 100 even for the super deluxe. 200-250 for the uber
  12. I guess that the album won't be remastered because it was already digitally recorded.
