1. Depends on the song, they've been going for "safe" sounding singles as of late, 'Crazy Tonight' 'Magnificent'' and Vertigo part 2 (Boots).

Moment of Surrender would've been ideal, same with NLOTH the title track

Never ever under estimate the importance of hits - the band would simply not exist if their back catalogue had very few hits - and thats what HTDAAB had in abundance - good strong singles.

Mark my words - U2s next album will have hits - because even the band recognise they are important.

yeah in my opinion the band seem to put far too much importance in trying to be the biggest band in the world and produce "hits" these days... the way i see it they have proved all they needed to prove throughout the last 25 years through albums like UF, JT, AB and ATYCLB. they have been the biggest and most successful band on the planet MULTIPLE times and had all the hits they need. i truly believe that they should now take a step back and just concentrate on making the music they wan't to make without trying too hard or worrying whether it will be successful or not or whether the production is 100000% perfect.
maybe then we wouldn't have to wait so long for constantly pushed back sub-par new albums and we would have a lot more interesting albums like zooropa and passengers which i would rather listen to over their "hit singles" any day of the week...

Agreed. They should stop trying to become relevant again in terms of radio play and general music culture and just get back into the music. When they made Achtung Baby they could care less what people, including their fans thought about it. The way they saw it, they ahd created something special and if it was their last album, so be it, it was a hell of a last album in their minds. (Facts from U2byU2)

I think NLOTH could've been the same way if they hadn't tried to keep it mainstream at the same time as experimental. A lot of the tracks on there have such great promise, but they're drowned out my mainstream hits like Magnificent, Crazy Tonight, Stand Up Comedy, and Boots. Songs like Fez, Cedars, and White As Snow were really a glimpse of where the album could have gone, to a place where U2 had never been. But no, they had to try and do both and the album turned out to be a dud (in certain respects, I never listen to it).
  4. It is underrated.
This record made me a U2-fan (already 8 years ago, time flies).
I played it regularly, in the car, in my room,... And I still do now.
    It won the masses.
It has great, modern rock/pop songs on it.
The only really bad song on it is One Step Closer.
  5. No hit singles....cliche as it is, art stands forever.

Hits stand a week on the radio and 35 seconds in someone's music player.
  6. Vertigo
  7. No, I don't think it is
  8. This was my post 3 years ago, doesn't time fly! I would give anything for another HTDAAB style album. I have no idea if this album is still underrated or not, i've always loved it. I was so proud of them once again. They were hungry, ambitious and had momentum on their side from ATYCLB and the Elevation tour. NLOTH on the other hand was over hyped and under delivered big style and I reckon that there are a lot of fans out there who will now look back on HTDAAB with a great deal of affection.
  9. Everything after POP was a disappointment to me.
  10. I can't believe someone would still be a fan if your band hasn't put out anything good for more than 15 years.... That's bullshit.

    I agree with this statement.
