There are certainly better songs than it on the album, but not a single song would have done better on radio. I stand by that with Magnificent. I think the evidence lies in the abundance of radio play that it did not receive.

I'm afraid I largely agree. I actually think NLOTH was good, bar some duds (though ATYCLB has them too, right?). But no great singles. GOYB and Magnificent were perhaps the only single-like songs. Opening with Magnificent might indeed not have made much of a difference.

To add a sci-fi spin, what if the first single had been Invisible instead?
  2. ATYCLB is an album that gets a lot of hate. I think it's a great album and has an abundance of single songs, especially for the time it came out. In A Little While could have even been a single, maybe with a different mix or something though. Point is the songs were there.

NLOTH - the songs weren't there. It was a Zooropa without an Achtung Baby and without a clear idea in mind. Risks were tried but reigned in. GOYB was too much like Vertigo but not nearly as good. Maybe that's untrue and oversimplifying, but I actually heard that criticism from more than on person.
  3. I agree that GOYB was a terrible 1st single choice and it doesn't represent the album at all, NLOTH would be much better...
But i still think that No Line album si better and more "interesting" than ATYCLB and HTDAAB, songs like NLOTH, Fez/Being Born, Cedars are great, too bad NLOTH has identity crisis - half of the songs has that "Fez feeling" and the other half is just classic pop songs with almost random lyrics (Comedy, I'll Go Crazy)
it's like they decided to drop the album concept in the middle of recording, but i still like it
  4. Whenever we eventually get to hear the Fez sessions, we will want to kick them for what NLOTH turned out to be.

If anybody has seen 'From The Sky Down' it is the perfect example of two very intelligent men overthinking the sweet fuck out of everything.
  5. Can you all get back on track? I keep thinking all the posts mean there's actual album news but it's all just irrelevant dribble
