1. Have listened through a couple of times. Initial thoughts are:

    - Hurrah, the boys are back!

    - Enjoyable tunes but nothing has yet to tear me a new one; nothing stands out.

    - Feels much more tied-together piece of work than NLOTH - better or worse? Not sure yet. Maybe 3/5, possibly 3.5? (Interesting to see your comment just now, Ger ^^^)

    - Agree with earlier comments about it being made available for free for people to download rather than dumping it in the whole planet's iTunes folder - one the one hand, nice gesture; on the other, uber gimmickry that could be avoided, but 'tis the age we live in. (as an non-Appleista for no particular reason, makes one feel a bit left out of the party!)

    - Adam steals the show for me, belting basslines and grooves being ripped out all over the place.

    - Bono's having fun which is splendid, although not sure about some of the uber-high falsetto-ing - feels like he's trying to prove to himself that he's still got the range. Does he? Not sure.

    - Larry's on good form, still got it, signature style still feels fresh - UNLIKE...

    - ...The Edge, The Edge, The Edge. If there's one standout disappointment for me, it's Edge. I know he's never been riff-tastic or inclined to bashing out mega solos, but as the years go by I can't help but feel he gets sucked further and further into the clichés that have been levelled at him over the years. I appreciate he's made his name through certain approaches, but I also think his finest stuff has been when he's explored new territory (e.g. AB, Zooropa). I don't feel he's trying to do anything new or anything interesting on this record, and I find it a bit sad. I know the band have always done things 'their way', but there are times when I feel it's just crying out for something more from our man with the 6-strings. When in doubt, it's the old dotted delay - I love the fact that he was one of the main factors in making it a popularised approach to guitar, but it feels like it's become filler now; 'I'll stick it in just because that's what everyone does'. For sure, Edge turned into an art form, but it's since become a default for most artists and producers, and it's starting to get a bit dull. Don't get me wrong, something like WTSHNN or COBL has that power, that greatness, that gusto - but I don't think you can keep rehashing that. I remember pre-NLOTH, Bono said Edge was coming up with pure molten metal in the studio or suchlike ;I wasn't expecting Iron Maiden, but I was hoping for something visceral, gritty, bold - I guess I'm waiting for that Zoo Station moment. 6 years on, I feel I'm still waiting.

Will keep listening, of course - time changes many much, and very possible that these initial views will too. If nothing else, delighted to have some new stuff to get stuck into!
  2. This Album is Bass and Drums...best stuff is happening in the groove. Thats just where music is today. I do think headphones will allow you to hear some really cool stuff Edge is doing and there is a lot of it but mix has it buried for texture.
  3. There's definitely groove in the album. Some songs make me want to move. I'm a white Irish man so I can't, but I really want to
  4. Originally posted by germcevoy:So I'm loving it. My only gripe is still the clear disconnect between the different producers. It's grating on me a little. I like variation on an album but this feels more like clear gaps between when these songs were born rather than intentional variation in song writing and direction.

I'm undecided. What I really wanted was a full Danger Mouse album, and this might have been a possibility considering another album seems close to arrival.

The songs are all solid but as an album I find myself struggling with it. Time will tell.

I agree. Would love to see what the Danger Mouse version would be. I think we will be able to take songs from two albums and make a Danger Mouse version. I think you add Invisible and Ordinary love to the last three songs and you can get a feel. Very unique sounding. Plus the two new tracks on Oct 13 release might be his work as well. I know the alt take of The Troubles may be a different key from what girl who sang on it said. She recorded a version and year and half ago and then was called back this summer to record in new key.
  5. It's U2, and they want to please everybody. Hence 3-5. 9-11 is indeed an interesting glimpse on what a full DM could look like. Musically, it would be heaven - like Broken Bells, but (even) better. Mature and yet beautiful songs, with a slight touch of melancholy, fantastically played, cool sounds from the 70's, 80's and 10's etc. However, this wouldn't fully represent U2 - a gigantic stadium rock band.

I hope they'll be a bit braver in the future. As many have observed, they really are at their best when they are not trying so hard to please.
  6. For me the album was a bit uninteresting except for Raised by Wolves, Ceadarwood Road and The Troubles, which is really fantastic the only song on the album which feels close to being a classic. If they had a full Dangermouse Album it would have been great.
  7. Okay, again, I did not post this.

"Don't know how it is around the rest of the world, but U2 has 15 albums in the top 200 itunes New Zealand, and their worldwide ranking is
number one - relevant, hell yes!!!!

    Check out their performance here:
