1. Bono said that Martin is a wanker and Bowie didn't accept a song of them......so what i say, that is a band halfway boyband halfway popband nothing to do with rock. The first three albums ok but than.........
  2. When did Bono say that?

Also, let's not lose our heads over the fact that David Bowie turned them down for one song. I'm fairly certain if U2 asked Bowie to collaborate with them on Miami they would get turned down as well.

You're joking right? Every U2 fan knows that! We even call him The Wanker in a humorous note every now and then.

Regarding the Bowie issue, well, when you propose a worldwide respected artist a collaboration, you make sure the song quality is up to par right? Maybe even the best on the album so it gets its share of attention and respect, right? So U2 would have proposed Bowie to collaborate with them on Gone, Please or some of the other gems on that album, not on Miami for sure. Coldplay are just not what they used to be, their brilliance and spark is gone. I'm as sad as anyone acknowledging that because I am (was) a huge fan, but that's what it is.
  4. no i'm not joking said it before NLOTH in a radio programm......
  5. The decline began with Mylo Xyloto. Don't get me wrong, that album has some terrific tunes, but creatively it was a step in the wrong direction after Viva La Vida in my opinion.

I think Ghost Stories showed promise of being something truly special with the release of Midnight. I know not everyone was a fan of that song, but I thought it was a step in the right direction in terms of them getting away from those grandiose pop tunes and going for a more experimental, intimate album. I didn't expect the whole album to sound like that, but I thought it'd be a representation of the tone. Then Magic came out, then Sky Full of Stars, and that's when it was clear that Ghost Stories was a phoned in in-between project. The only other redeeming song on that album IMO was Oceans, but even then it sounded like old Coldplay, not groundbreaking Coldplay.

The new album is everything I disliked about Mylo Xyloto X 10. Way too produced, way too conscious of pop conventions. It's funny, we often remark how U2 should stop trying to be so relevant in the popular music game, and SoI sounds WAY more experimental and creative than this album does given how much more U2 talks about that.
  6. No, I think Coldplay still has something to give. Their new album has a couple gems on it, albeit as a whole it's not very good. I still stand behind the statement that if Coldplay didn't release MX, we wouldn't even be talking about them today. Every album before Viva is literally the exact same thing over and over and over again and a lot of people were getting bored of it.

If they were literally the exact same thing over and over it probably would have breached their recording contract

I disagree though. I think they were working on a thread and each album was better than the last until Mylo Xyloto (I know people love Rush of Blood, but I do think X&Y and Viva La Vida are superior).

I'm sure they still have something to give, but their new album isn't it. Maybe I'll give it another listen, but I couldn't find anything redeeming in any of the songs at first listen (apart from A Head Full of Dreams, but that's because it just reminded me of A Sort of Homecoming - a song which Chris Martin has said himself is one of his favourites).

Either they peaked early and their output now is just getting worse and worse, or they are getting better but they no longer speak to me. To my ears their music has gone from interesting and creative to increasingly "poppy" and uninteresting.

EDIT: It's sort of like U2 post-Joshua Tree. They had done the anthems, they had done the big songs for the big crowds, and then they went and made a number of albums that were the opposite of what they had done. Coldplay have just kept following that thread and to me they've gone too far. Almost every single I hear now just makes me say "oh look, a new "Coldplay" song" - meaning that all of their songs have the same bland and used feel to them now. Fine examples: Atlas, Sky Full of Stars, the new Maroon 5- I mean Coldplay song, etc..
  8. A Head Full Of Dreams is not their crowning contribution, that's for sure. It somewhat bugs me that there have been whisper of this being their last album, because I really don't want them to go out like that.

They need to take a page out of U2's book and take 4 years to come up with something.
  9. I agree with Canadian Alex on this. Their first four albums are the albums I always go back to because they're the best. Everything post Viva La Vida has gotten gradually worse. Well, gradually through Mylo Xyloto and Ghost Stories, before dropping off sharply with their current album. I was quite disappointed that I didn't get to see them live while they toured MX but I can't even be bothered to look at the tour dates this time. I guess I'm falling into the Oldplay camp.
  10. I'm also hugely disappointed I missed out on their MX tour. I still want to see them live, but I think I'll wait to see how their current tour plays out. With any luck, it may take the course of the 360 tour and turn into a "best hits" tour.

    "Canadian Alex"

Yeah. The Mylo Xyloto "show" was unreal, I'll say that. But yeah, as put more succinctly by you - I also fall into that camp.
