Experience and Innocence tour
Legs (3): Promo tour, Leg 1: North America, Leg 2: Europe
Shows: 75
  1. I don't think there will be an AB tour. Otherwise they would have saved Macphisto/Acrobat for that.
  2. It's actually weird to me that people really think there's going to be an Achtung tour like there was the JT tour.

Ain't gonna happen, folks. There's no way they'd do that again. Three reasons among probably many more:

    1) The pretty concrete rumours that they did that tour to fulfill contractual obligations to Live Nation (which obviously wouldn't exist for another tour of the same type)
    2) They wouldn't be able to spin it with the same explanation ("We're at the same place now as we were in when we made that album, politically and socially" etc.), and it would seem even more like a nostalgia/cashing in thing which they seemingly want to avoid at all costs
    3) Like it or not, JT is the beloved/classic U2 album to most people(across fans, casual fans, mainstream, etc.), not Achtung Baby. In terms of ticket sales and all that, there's no contest.

I think people keep saying it because they really want it (an AB tour that is), but it's just not going to happen.

Is there concrete rumours it was a contractual obligation or is it just that a lot of people had that opinion? I think the latter, i don’t think I’ve ever seen any evidence the band were forced into last years tour. Anyway apart from that the band could quite easily justify an Achtung Baby anniversary tour by explaining how much they enjoyed doing the JT anniversary tour and rediscovering the songs. I think the band would really enjoy playing the album and it would be very well received I’d imagine given how many people consider it there best album. I’m not saying it will happen or is likely even but I would say it’s definitely not out of the question.

Doubt very much this would happen. Achtung Baby needs to stay in the archives of history for all that it is and was. To trolley this out as an anniversary tour would be just a novelty and I feel it would detract the whole ZOO TV experience. Groundbreaking and magnificent. No, this should never become another Joshua Tree Anniversary Tour.
I could see why they did the 2017 tour. The album warranted it due to it being as relevant then as now. I did get that. I am happy they did it too.
But a second time around is just wishful thinking and novelty. No thanks!

I didn't see this post before I posted mine in reply to deanallison.
As great an album it is, Achtung Baby needs to stay where it is.
Joshua Tree is really the classic of the U2 canon. Achtung is the sister to it.
I will enjoy the recent resurrection of the Achtung Baby songs don't get me wrong. They fit well right now. I am looking forward to seeing them being played after all these years. An Achtung Baby anniversary? Can't see it happening.

I can’t agree or accept the argument that it would detract either from zoo tv or the album itself or that it is novelty. That was then and this is now, it doesn’t change the past by playing it now, when you play the album it’s still the same sound that comes out of it and zoo tv still happened and it was still groundbreaking and magnificent. All it would do is give us the chance to hear some amazing songs all at the same show for numerous nights.
  7. Trundling ZOO TV out again like a second rate Joshua Tree homage. Not a chance! Such pastiche. What a lack of creativity if they did. Hanging in the wake of past glories.

Best left where it is. End of. I saw the original tour. It was indeed groundbreaking and real art. I'd not want to see it trolleyed out again. I really hope this never even makes the drawing board let alone enter the thoughts of the band.

Let's be honest the whole album being just as relevant now as it was then was just a convenient soundbite from the band.

The only reason we got that tour was to satisfy contractual obligations with live nation.

Maybe so. And they are still in their pockets. Let's not have the contractually obliged bullshit of ZOO TV 2 though.
  10. I SERIOUSLY doubt it is happening. The best you can hope for you want this is that the next album and tour is 3 years from now which coincides with the anniversary. Then they may play MORE from AB but not the full album. I think the next tour /album is a minimum 4 years away anyway and it could be of the farewell/we probably aren’t coming back but who knows variety.

Detracting from Zoo TV? I don’t get that at all. I seriously doubt that would have anything to do with them not doing it. Zoo TV was a great tour. I’m glad I got so experience it. But some have taken it to mythical status now. It was cool and radically different for U2 at the time. But it was not some surreal out of body life changing experience like some make it out to be. It was an over the top production using TV screens promoting U2’s second best album.

I think the JT 17 tour happened for many reasons, not just one. I do not think the sole reason was to get a tour in for Live Nation. I think they thought it was a benefit to doing it, but not THE reason to do it. Album delay, Bono health issues, etc. were all equally at play. It was cool, but I hope U2 don’t do any other old album tours. Put out new music and tour for it.

I think you are right about the contributing factors to the Joshua Tree anniversary tour. It was timely and fitted around those health issues and the album delay. It allowed them the time to craft Songs of Experience to what it is now.
  12. The way I see it TJT17 took away from nothing and offered us some great shows featuring great songs that we hadn’t seen in years or at all. SOE still happened E&I still happened. If Achtung Baby 30 happens then it wouldn’t stop the band releasing a new album and touring it, we would just be getting more u2 shows, that for me is the reality, I would be against anniversary tours if it meant no tours of new material but that’s not the case and getting both is the ideal scenario.
