  2. Bitching about the setlist on the most diverse tour the band has ever done is completely useless and frankly it's a tired subject. So the band play "16 of the same songs as one show back in 2009." Well, that still means we're hearing 7-8 songs that weren't played, which is ridiculous, especially when one of those is FREAKIN' ZOOROPA.

    Some people will never be happy no matter what the band chose to play or not play. I just don't understand how we can't be happy that our favorite band is still around and playing for us.

    Obviously, you missed my point.I simply asked why the hell the band dropped all the new songs.I see you failed to address that.That was my main point.That's not bitching...its a question and its also a fact.They dropped all the new songs.Why ?

    Also, I was responding to the Edges quote of how "radically different" the show is.I disagree.With no new songs,and 75% of the set being the same as 2009,that is not "radically different".

    I also said I LIKE the setlist.I expect most of the same from U2.I have followed them live for over 25 years, and they have never really mixed things up alot during a tour.That, is why Im so disappointed.Im kinda down that they dropped the new tunes.

    I believe I also mentioned that I will be HAPPY to hear that exact set ,at both shows, in Montreal.But is it "radically different".I dont think it is.Sorry if you dont agree.

    Again...I wish the NEW SONGS from last year were back in.......thats not BITCHING.

    I have to agree with you on almost all your posts on the board. As much as I like U2, I really don't respect their musical abilities as performers all that much. I've never really heard the band do any kind of improv... and really, if you watch Edge on "It Might Get Loud" it pains to say it, but he really is the weakest link. I think this kind of proves my point.... they constantly play the sames songs identically every night.

    It also kind of pains me to say it, but I also think they are totally out of touch with their fanbase. Sure, we here are all huge fans, but they so very rarely give people what they want. Always catering to the lowest common denominator. Sure, they might pull out The Fly, but only after they practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice for weeks , and will probably still have flubs when it's debuted.
    Dammit, now I'm going to have to listen to David GIlmour's Live in Gdansk's "A Great Day for Freedom." One of the greatest performances of a song in the whole PF history... and they only had one day to practice it.

    I'm stealing this thought from many Top Gear episodes... It's like the entire setlist is designed by a committee that has to sign of on it first, no passion whatsoever... just so it's pleasing to the masses.

    i would say go listen to a bunch of shows from Vertigo tour(or even the Joshua Tree tour), they have MANY different setlists, and while the songs have an overall similarity from show to show, they do throw in many changes to create a slightly different feel to the song = some songs are Adams bass in Mysterious Ways and Edges guitar in Bullet the Blue Sky AND The Fly intro, and Larry's drums in Streets-not to mention how they change the playing of a lot of songs from tour to tour. what your saying just doesn't sound like you've heard/seen a large variety of concerts by U2 - there is always something to complain about, sure, but the more you listen the more you'll realize there is more to discover about their songs their playing and their concerts...and of course the Australia shows of Vertigo, now that is the #1 reason why The Edge is no weak link.

    There are many bands who do the same thing though, not just U2. You can't blame a band for wanting a song to sound perfect when they play it. Sure it'd be great if they did more on the fly improvising, like if somebody has a sign that says "Play a sort of homecoming!" and they play it, that'd be amazing. But at the same time I'd rather hear a setlist full of hits and rarities (BD/Zooropa) then a bunch of half-assed improvizations. Listen to A Sort Of Homecoming from the two times they played it on the Elevation tour and you'll see what I mean.

    As for being out of touch with their fanbase, how is that even true? Look at the songs we've seen this tour. Unforgettable Fire, Your Blue Room, Ultraviolet, Hold Me Thrill Me, Scarlet, MLK, Zooropa, Love Rescue Me, Out Of Control, Even Better Than The Real Thing, as well as a few more and a handful of never-before-heard songs (Every Breaking Wave). This is U2 getting out of their comfort zone. Sure they don't perform the same way as say the Chilli Peppers do, but so what, if you don't like it, don't listen or pay to go watch. 10 minute jams bore me after a while anyway. If I want to watch that I'll go to my drummers house and the two of us can jam.

    People go to a U2 show because they want to hear U2 songs that have accumulated over the past 31 years, and U2 wants to give that to them. I garuntee you if they didn't listen to their hardcore fanbase, we would'nt have heard any of the songs I just listed up there this tour. Very few bands actaully pull a setlist out of their ass, many bands choregraph their entire show, song for song, stage-move for stage-move just as U2 does. And why would you bring up Pink Floyd? Sure they have 10 minute jams, but those aren't exactly SUPER IMPRESSIVE to the ear. It's a repeating chord progression with virtuoso musicians soloing overtop. Big deal. I'd rather hear U2 play a heavily practised-but still flubby The Fly than hear that. Also many of their shows were completely practised and choreographed, take the Dark Side tour, or better yet The Wall tour. Probably even more choreographed than most bands. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that U2 isn't the only band that scripts their show.

    And as for Edge being the weakest link in It Might Get Loud, how can you even back that up? He's a different kind of guitar player than Page or White are. They're both blues/rock guitarists, used to playing around with blues scales and whatnot, while Edge tends to write riffs that work with his band, not so he improvise whatever on top. It's obvious Edge isn't as technically proficient as other guitarists, but he makes up for it in his wide variety of guitar tones that have brought U2 to different places all across their career. You can't bring him down because he isn't as pro at jamming as the other two are, all you have to do is look at his career as a guitarist and you'll see that he's clearly not the weakest link. None of them are, the only thing Edge does is stand out because he's not the same TYPE of guitarist. Also, I'm not sure what attacking Edge has to do with U2 as a whole, because many would argue that Edge has carried U2 from the get-go.

    Gov't Mule
    Primus / Les Claypool
    Widespread Panic
    North Mississippi All Stars
    Cake
    Pearl Jam
    And a lot of others.

    But yeah, as much as I love U2, the whole forming a band before they could play really shines through a lot of times.

    Watch out! Zooropa is one of the biggest's surprises of this tour.. That's a dream for must of us fans that Zooropa is being played .

    Thanks.DMB and Bruce Sprinsteen change their setlist every single night as well.Why cant U2 do this,as they did on the Vertigo tour ???

    But, that wasnt really what I was getting at.I know all about U2s setlists,and the repeats and all that.Im used to it by now.Sure,would I like U2 to break up a setlist like Pearl Jam,on a nightly basis ??? No question.But,they dont.I accepted that over 25 years ago.I was asking why the new songs (which I really like) are now gone ?


    As far as the Vertigo Tour,I have said many times over,that tour was WAY BETTER (IMO) than 360.For the simple fact,the band played so many different songs each night,really for the first time in their careers.I saw the band 10 times on the Joshua Tree tour.They played 99% of the same songs each night.Look it up.The setlists are on this site.Elevation was the same as well on a nightly basis.


    Vertigo also had 3 different songs open a show (LAP,Vertigo,COBL),in the same year (2005).360 is in its 3rd year now,so I dont think we can really count that as the same.The Vertigo tour had so many different songs as encores,I lost track.I saw the band 4 times in 2005, 4 different songs closed each gig.


    As a huge U2 fan,Im not here to mock them.I love this band.I just dont understand why they have to close EVERY SINGLE SHOW with the same 2 SONGS......for 3 friggin years now.Once the band gets to COBL,its same set,EVERY NIGHT.That, my friends,is a sad fact.......Peace.

    Look at the Claw. Now, try to arrange its lights for different songs every night.

    When you do please please stop whinning. They have played a great diversity of material this tour, why keep complaining?
    It was the same in ZooTV and Popmart

    U2's 360° Tour
    We found 59 different songs played during these shows.

    U2's Vertigo Tour
    We found 60 different songs played during these shows.

    U2's PopMart Tour
    We found 55 different songs played during these shows.

    U2's ZOO TV Tour
    We found 54 different songs played during these shows.

    See that? Almost 20 shows to be played yet and they have played 59 different songs, one less than the Vertigo tour you keep talking about
